[Proposal] Planets that actually orbit the sun

So this would probably take a lot of work, kinda restructuring of a lot of things in the game, but it would be cool and add a lot to the realism factor of Eve, which is a big part of the appeal of Eve in the first place.

- Planets that orbit the sun

I'm sure any Eve player with a basic understanding of Astronomy has at one point or another wondered about this. Planets in real life orbit the sun, so why don't planets in Eve do the same thing?

- Stations anchored to these planets would also orbit the sun

This is where it would become somewhat tricky, since if this is implemented, every day after downtime, or at some point, each station and planet would actually move its position in space along its orbit. This would make it so the distances between the planets and Stargates would change on a day-to-day basis. So sometimes that warp from the station in Rens to Frarn gate or to the Abudban gate in Rens is 40 AU, but then later in the year, maybe it is a 20 AU warp. (I'm just making these numbers up for argument sake.)

The planets closer to the sun would take less time to complete an orbit, and those further would take much longer to complete an orbit.

- Gates orbiting the sun

Whether or not the Stargates would move along an orbit in the same way as planets would be up to CCP. I would assume they would since if you look at a Solar System Map, the Stargates appear to be on an orbital line, they just never change position on it.

In null-sec this could be a huge change to the dynamics of certain areas. For example in Curse, you can enter Doril through the Sendaya gate, but only one of the stations is in D-Scan range from there, and the out-gates (Utopia and Jorund) are right next to each other, but on the opposite end of the system.

If gates followed an actual orbit around the sun of a solar system, this would not always be the case. Sometimes the Utopia gate and the Jorund gate would be across the system from one another (depending on their distance from the sun and chosen path of orbit).

One issue I can already think of is how gate and station Tacticals would be affected if the gates and stations actually moved from their spots every day.

I'm sure there are a lot of other things to consider with this implementation, but I expect everyone reading this to comment, critique, analyze the possible outcome. I'm personally a PvPer and wouldn't like to see any implementations negatively affect PvP, but I don't think that would be the case with this one.

This has been suggested countless times, and I still fully support it. The only bookmarks I think we REALLY need are the POS bookmarks, since they don't otherwise show up in an easily accessible location. If the planets orbit, the moons do, and if the moons orbit, the POS does. That means POS bookmarks would get screwed.

Gate, Station, and Planet tacticals aren't really as important, imo. But that's just my opinion, and I'm sure there are those who vehemently disagree.

Aside from all that, it's really not a balancing thing. It's more of a technical issue that CCP has already said they don't quite know how to work out, or simply don't have the time or resources to devote to it.

Supported anyways.

Since Eve doesn't use a newtonian flight model, having celestials moving while we fly could cause problems. Problems like the gate moving faster than the freighter trying to use it. That can be fixed by keeping everything stationary while Eve is up, only shifting things during downtime.

Bookmarks can be handled by binding each one to a celestial, and moving them with the celestial.

From what i recall of the other posts on this subject... having orbiting bodies makes the servers meltdown.

Sometimes we have to step back and say "yes it would be cool, but would it actually make the game and gameplay any better?"

I would have to say, for the amount of work required, it wouldn't make the game any different to how it is now.

got a friend in my corp who petitions the lack of orbital vectors on planets/moons and stations once a month. hes never missed a month and is 7 years old (in eve lol)

So then couldn't bookmarks be re-calibrated through a ship scan warp to a planet and then your bookmarks could automatically be adjusted based on the bodys location in space. Or better yet a ship scan could determine how far things have shifter since your last visit based on the traversal of the planets around the star.

Anyways I still feel that this feature would be amazing and promote more scanning making all space more like wormhole space and therefore so much more fun but I do see the huge technical difficulties but if there's ever a way conceived CCP this would be awesome and brings the game that much more close to real life and allowing the game software to move forward in the future to controlling our real space ships humans wont leave earth why should we. The ships can do the heavy lifting through telepathy over wide band something will invent in the future :).

What would this add to gameplay? Seems to me that it would be neat the first day then be totally ignored after that.. lot of work for what amounts to not much at all.

I figure... We have ships that have computer systems that we can't really fathom correct? Computing actions which hurl us through space at literally astronomical speeds and stopping on a dime. (Well most of the time at least) So long ago when I first started playing EVE I just chalked it up that the planets and other things which werent on an orbit or moving weren't doing so because of our advanced ships computers constantly calculating the drifts and such. If you think about it, it's the most logical out for this.

Also, I dont understand this. I PvP, so I'm not sure how POS BMs are the ONLY ones we really need. If it werent for BMs we would just be crashing into each other all the time at gates and the such. That would break null sec as all you would have to do is bubble camp a gate and wait for EVERYONE to warp to zero because you dont have a BM.

Think of the costs of the needed hardware to implement such changes and the cost in human resources. Will they be worth it just for the sake of having celestials that actually move ? I do not think so... besides, there are still plenty of more important changes to be made, changes that are more or less at hand for the moment.

I'd love to see it, I think it'd be a great endeavor, and I do think you'd see the benefit. Particularly if the system occasionally had weird alignments and things on occasion.

That being said... It's a long way off. The basics of grids and such would be affected, and all that is some of the most low level base code EVE runs on, that nobody has touched in ten years. It'd be a massive overhaul of that code. (Which admittedly, is due someday anyhow.)

There'd be a lot of gameplay adjustments, but I think there's nothing wrong with having bookmarks go out of date. It'd make sense, really. Though the removal of ability to hang onto perches long-term would mean gate-based gameplay would change drastically. Though I honestly don't think gates should move. They're pointed at other stars, they should be stationary.

There could be a case for certain types of dynamic bookmarks. A bookmark being tied to the POS, not a space coordinate, or something like that.

Game performance might be a huge issue too. Where ships would be if planets moved into the same space while they were logged off.

I mean... I'd love to see it in EVE's second decade. But low priority. I want Walking in Stations first. =)

I assumed the 'story line' explanation of why the planets don't move is because we are all flying in 'Faster than light' spacecraft, i.e. 'warp drive'. The planets are moving so slowly they seem to be standing still from our perspective.

I still wonder why the official explanation of how jump gates works says it uses the gravity of two suns to create an artificial wormhole, but I have only ever seen ONE SUN in every system. It's another minor detail, but how hard could it be to add an extra sun?

There's a lot of things about the EVE universe that don't reflect the actual physics of space. For example, the way our spacecraft move is a lot more like a submarine than a spaceship. It's as though we are traveling through a fluid medium, and not the virtual vacuum of space. An actual spacecraft would travel more like a brick on ice. You would turn on your propulsion modules, and you would just go faster and faster, nothing would slow you down until you turned your rocket exhaust in the direction of your destination exactly half way through your trip.

Combat in space would be pretty difficult if not impossible. In the vastness of space, it would be pretty unlikely that two spacecraft would ever be able to pinpoint one another, much less intercept one another. Once you located your enemy, they would be gone to who knows where? It would be a lot like shooting down a specific bullet using another bullet in the desert at night. Even if you did manage to catch up with another ship, simply turning your ship around so that your rocket exhaust was facing the enemy would do a lot more damage than lasers or bullets or missiles. There's a lot of heat and radiation propelling your ship forwards.

Cloaking ships would be impossible, since the energy signatures of a ship could be seen clearly from half way across the solar system. Even now from Earth, we would be able to see the rocket trails from the Space shuttle from as far away as Jupiter.

Your point about only one sun around to work the jump gate..... You are forgetting about the sun at the other end of the artificial worm hole (at the exit jump gate).

I'm all for this, although for for some planets, you wouldnt really notice anything. I mean, if a gate/planet is 120 AU away, it would take like 80+ years to orbit it's sun lol.
