Launcher either won't open or fails at patching files

I am running Eve off a flash drive (just for logging in and changing skills when I'm on the road). It's formatter exFAT. I'm on a MacBook Air running OS X 10.8.4.

When I double click on EVE Online.app the thing fails to launch entirely. Here's some console logs.

If I show package contents, I can go to appdata/EVE Online.app

This launches the launcher, which downloads a patch and then stops. Then it shows "INSTALLING FILES" and sits there forever, sometimes flickering to "DOWNLOADING LAUNCHER UPDATE"

How do I fix this? It used to work fine.
