EVE stops responding, but UI still functions

I just recently got back into EVE after a 5 year absence. I've got it installed and playing on Ubuntu 12.04 with Playonlinux. I'm using wine-1.6-rc4 and I've got d3dx9_36, d3dx11 (disabled), vcrun2005, vcrun2008, vcrun2010 installed via winetricks.

The issue I'm having is that very randomly it seems like the client stops talking to the network. The UI isn't frozen as such, since I can still open and manipulate windows and give my ship commands. It's just that nothing happens to them, or they never load their data. Sometimes I can go for a few hours without it happening, and sometimes it's every half hour. I need to change desktops and kill -9 the client to close it because clicking "Quit Game" doesn't do anything once the game chooses to do this to me.

It looks like someone else has had this problem a couple of years ago, but nothing else was posted there as a solution. His description is exactly what's happening to me as well.

The log file gives lots of d3d and glsl errors, but they are present in logs for sessions that stop responding as well as the times that everything works fine and I log off normally.

I've got all the graphics settings turned to minimum or off and it doesn't seem to do anything to alleviate the problem.

Has anybody got any ideas or know what this is ?

Looks like a connection loss. If you are connected via a wireless network, this might be the cause. Support for various wireless NICs is quite lacking on linux. I.e. some atheros chips are unstable, and intel wireless driver doesn't stomach 802.11n.

To be more specific, I had the very same problem on Intel 6235 until I forced it to not use 802.11n.
