But I also think this. EVE Online is an incredibly detailed game. Listening to Chris Roberts in his presentation video, I get the sense that this game will also be incredibly detailed, including the PvP. It won't just be about click Orbit, and activate modules. See who get's the better role of the dice and win with more hits than misses - more good hits than grazing hits. Chris Roberts' PvP is gonna be about piloting skills too. How well can you maneuver your airplane and outperform your opponent? I think that will attract a lot of EVE PVP enthusiasts.

How do you get from point A to point B there. If a person is an EVE pvp enthusiast, he might not LIkE "manual flying" games, he might like being the CAPTAIN, not the pilot.

Even if SC appeals to EVE players, it won't come with some magical kill switch that deletes EVE. Many people play more than one game, a pvp player might play EVE for strategic level game play and the play SC the same night for lower level tactical style gameplay.

like all the games before it, SC will probably be ok, but it won't be EVE, and people will still play EVE because they like it. i'll be playing both (if SC is any good) in the same way i play EVE and Star Trek Online right now.

I did say "a lot PVP enthusiasts would be attracted", but I did not mean EVERY SINGLE PVP enthusiast. I did not suggest that these players will leave EVE for good to play SC, but I've read so many posts by players who say, that EVE is starting to get old, that they have to give EVE a rest and come back in a few weeks or months - or years. I'm sure, that in their search for something fresh, they may give SC a look, and they may like it. They may find that they like getting tactical and piloting, and not just commanding.

Your very own admission that people play more than one game, and that SC could very well be one of those games means that you AGREE with me. EVE PVPers will be attracted to it.

The game has not come out, yet. It's not honest to say that it will be the game that will set all kinds of records and wipe the floor up with EVE, etc, etc. But it is also dishonest to say that the game will be meh.... It is fair to say that the game looks interesting.

Watch this space.  New exciting signature in development.

There is the additional complication that with things like the POS code literally no one knows how it really works. It can't be "patched"; it has to be rewritten from scratch.

I'm not knocking them having 8.3 million players, that's a goodly chunk of people to have playing your game and fair play to them for achieving those sorts of numbers, but such a number wouldn't be possible for a game like Eve that runs on a single shard basis.

CCP admit that if 2 million players joined tomorrow they'd be in trouble, because they don't have the resources to provide for that scenario. It's a different kind of game purely because the WoW universe is sharded and Eves is not.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

The hardware requirements for that many players in a single universe would make the NSA cringe.

Aye, but just imagine a Eve where you had say 250,000 players logging on at once.. ooooh all those ships to go boom

Because is Jovian tech?
On a serious note, and forgive me if me if I bring this back, what was CCP thinking when they attempted Incarna if as you describe one feature can only be looked at every 5 expansions? Roberts is feeding from that right now. And it might actually works.

I'll reserve any opinions until there is an actual playable version of SC, and not just hype.

Since that won't be for another couple of years at least, I'll be right here when I'm not doing RL stuff.

star citizen is world of tanks in space. It will be certainly a fun game but its not comparable to eve.

(hey but i am sure somebody will say "it looks like halo" because there is a marine with a helmet in it)

how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value

I wonder how is EVE preparing to face the might of Chris Roberts' new MMO. I am a devoted "casual" EVE player and so far I managed to convince 1 player -my cousin- to join me in EVE, but lately we are having conversations about Star Citizen, and I am afraid I am going to loose my only wingman in space.
EVE has a decade of Lore and stories that players have written. EVE can hold massive battles in one single server. EVE is brutal, unforgiving. EVE is EVE.
But because most of us are familiar with Robert's Space Industries and games (freelancer, Wing Commander) , I wonder what is CCP's plan to counteract the loss of subscriptions to an MMO that promises (and surely deliver) a more personal and immersive space flying experience? The universe size will not be as big at launch, but in time, just like CCP did when player's are handed the tools to shape the universe, it will expand massively, and probably match most of he expectations of many scy-fi players.
I thought Incarna was a cool step to attract skeptical players and make the experience more personal. Why didn't The Mittani and henchmen expressed their negative opinions at the previous fanfest , when the Incarna facts were unveiled, instead of burning Jita and leave a fair chuck of designers and Devs unemployed. I could not wait for Incarna to be online. Alas, tradition proved more resilient than change. And Incarna will never come back....unless.... Star Citizen proves that it can be done.
Now I understand the prejudice against "spacebarbie" gameplay. But just like with everything in EVE, if you don't like it, you don't have to do it. (I am against the gtfo stance of most)
I still think that Dust 514is destined to fail. It won't do any favours to EVE. There's a game called Titan Fall, that is so reminiscent of Dust. And better imo.
I am a casual player, I see EVE from outside the box. My opinions are just the way I feel at the moment, and at the moment I see EVE going for another decade but significantly less strong after SC is launched.
Care to share your thoughts?

I think he works for them, nice plug for your company though. Lots of EVE bashing and i love how you bring up one guys name and put "might" with it. No way did EVE Online get to where it is on the back of one individual, nor shall the other game unless of course it's going to look like pong.

When you say that WoW sits at the top, my immediate question is; what are you referring to?

Really now? So by your logic, since WoW is bleeding subscribers, there must be a exodus of talent from Blizzard HQ which would explain a few things like Diablo 3 and a Panda expansion. Right?

Really.

WoW will naturally bleed subscribers, because they can't make the content that matters with an ancient engine (hint CCP), which is why Blizzard is working on Titan (where the A team is). The talent remains, because they're working on MMO 2.0, not another expansion itself.

If you're a professional you want to show you work at a company that has potential in your career. If a professional had a choice between Blizzard and CCP, who do you think they'll go with? CCP may give them more creative control, but if the employee want to rise in the ranks (and make better salary), they need to prove they can work with the big guys with the hundred million dollar budgets. The talent flocks to Blizzard.

Have to attract that talent. Without it, it's scrapping the bottom of the bucket. CCP needs that "can do" team of innovators and those with the talent to "make it so".

And that comes from showing they have the numbers to make the venture worthwhile to that talent...and that CCP has the money to pay for that talent!

Last I heard, all work on Titan so far had been scrapped and it was back to the drawing board and unless there is a official confirmation from Blizzard that Titan is indeed an MMO, all you can really do at this point is speculate which is pretty pointless and won't add to the discussion.

If I was a game developer and I want to soar in the games industry? I'd send my resume to Riot Games and not Blizzard. Sure, you can argue that Blizzard makes mountains of cash each month but MOBAs are taking over the MMO space fast and unlike CCP that has survived setbacks and thrived on margins in comparison, Blizzard cannot and will not survive in a space where paid subscriptions are becoming a thing of the past.

As for finding talent or talent coming to CCP, I am not too worried.

Confirming that Blizzard are starting over on Project Titan, and that it'll be lucky to see the light of day by 2016, rumour has it that the 100 strong Dev team that were working on it has been reduced by 70% to 30 devs.
