No, you can't import any pictures to use as an avatar. You need to create your avatar using the in-game creation tool, so it does have to be a photo of your character model.

Probably, but it's even easier just to take it from your forum avatar. For example, the link to yours is https://image.eveonline.com/Character/90620850_1024.jpg

Also yes: you can store portraits from the game itself, there's even a button for it somewhere, I believe it is Right Click (on anyone) > Save Portrait. The files are stored in a folder inside your eve directory, shouldn't be hard to find.

A more thorough explanation of what's going on in the above examples...

Eve's character portraits, corp/alliance logos, and item icons/renders are stored on the Eve image server, located at https://image.eveonline.com. The site itself contains a fair explanation of how things work:

Quote:
Character images

The URL pattern to get character portraits is
/Character/{characterID}_{width}.jpg

Character portraits are available in sizes up to 512x512.

As you can probably infer from the above, each character (and corporation, item, etc) has an internal unique "ID". Once you know the ID, you can get the image for that thing. These IDs aren't easily accessible publicly. They can be seen in the URLs that images come from (right click on a portrait, "view image"), in some links 3rd party tools use (e.g. the ID of the Torpedo Launcher II is 2420 in this chruker db link), or via the Eve API or database dump (for developers).

Once you have that, you just need to determine what size you want the image in. Sizes are square and are one of the following: 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024. Only renders are available in 128+, .

So now, some examples.

Copying the address of my forum portrait gives https://image.eveonline.com/Character/92596011_128.jpg, so my character ID must be 92596011. If I want the largest available 1024x1024 image, I can simply change the "128" in the URL, giving me https://image.eveonline.com/Character/92596011_1024.jpg. You can see the pores on my face!

Taking the Torpedo Launcher II example, we can find two images of it:

This is probably information overload, but I was bored and wanted to type stuff. So there you go, an explanation of how to get the Eve image server to cough useful stuff up for you.
