Would be awesome to have a test server that was up every once in awhile that we could play on to remember the good 'ol days, and for newer players to see how the game used to be.

I would prefer 2003 -2004. But doubt that coding even exists anywhere anymore.

If could be an event for CCP to do on a special day.

'Time Capsuleers' Server for a day :)

Id love LOVE for this to happen, maybe even a mini series of old builds, "most popular expansions, revisited" over amonth :D

Probably too much work and such, BUT OMG great idea OP.

I think it's less about too much work at this point and more about it being totally impossible, since the code hasn't existed for a long time anymore and redoing it would be an act of insanity/colossal stupidity on CCP's part.

Why would the code not exist anymore? Did their archive burn down or something?

You are assuming they archived it in an easily usable format. Plus... do they have the servers and softearet need to run such a mirror? I'm not denying the mirror would be nice, but well...the cost, hardware, logistic effort could all be focused on improving eve which is what I would prefer.

Also, how would characters work? Transfer them? Would you code back in learning skills? Would my 2009 character be transfered or no? It just seems like a lot of work for a week of nostalgia play.

Yeah surely about the hardware avilable to run it, connection, other networking kit plus an admin's time to set it up test it etc and so on.

the code, at this point is probably the easiest!

You could easily run a 2003 eve server on a standard quad core vps with gigabit net. Obviously recoding would be moronic, but I'm sure they archived the servers over the years.

I'm not sure how CCP backs things up, but in software development it's quite common to work with a version control tool. In very rudimentary terms: first you dump a codebase somewhere. Every change, fix, or addition to that codebase is entered as a single 'revision' and documented: the system keeps track of which code was changed when, and by whom. It's not uncommon for a large repository to have hundreds of thousands of revisions. So basicly, if there was a version control in place all you'd need to do is install a revision on appropriate hardware. I think technically this is far from impossible, if the code was professionally maintained from the start. What might prove impossible though is to recover the exact characters and invenories from that time, relative databases are different animals and don't belong into a repository like the server / client code does.

Don't games generally get better over time, not worse?

I'd be fine with them reverting Eve to 1984 when it was called Elite, though.

I'd like 2003 -2004 only really because I missed those years. Would have been interesting to see what the game was like back then.

If CCP is at all professional about there software development practices they use some sort of version control software and branch the code at every release point. As a matter of fact I'm sure they do since point releases of one expansion occur while development of the next is underway.

It should be possible to deploy any expansion from since they started using version control software.
