He stood in the captain’s quarters of a dark, cold station near Amamake. There were no lights present, except the glow of the data panels, and his hawk nose and sharp features embodied the visage of a bird of prey as much as did his intense, motionless focus on the screens before him. He had an odd odor about him, not that he could smell it. The smell a mix of hot running circuitry and old flesh, it was unnoticeable to someone without the use of olfactory systems. Those senses were long discarded.. unnecessary… for someone of his purpose.

It was years ago and near the end of his natural life when X, he never could remember his previous identifier, became what he now lived. An old man even then, from a long line of poverty ridden baseliners, he never would have envisioned this “life” for himself. He had been summoned to the Nexstar corporation’s HQ for what he thought was a well-paid trial study on brain-circuitry interfacing. He didn’t know what to expect, only knowing that the ISK required to support his family had dwindled, and that he had to do something. He though that participating in this study would provide enough ISK to lift his family from their rut. Unfortunately for him, Nexstar’s mission was a bit more involved, and he was a bit more than a study participant.

Nexstar was a quickly rising technology corporation riding the wave of clone technology. The founder and CEO, Kaval Xor, was a young, greedy, and overly ambitious son of a wealthy family. A man who sought power and wealth and put them before all things, he who would be a lordling had a mission for his company – to combine his knowledge of slavery, circuitry, and wealth with this newly emerging technology of cloning. His mission; to create a construct of human intelligence, slave-like obedience, drone like efficiency, and clone-like longetivity.

Only it didn’t all go as planned. Midway through his technological breakthrough a rival, Havan Ka’dun of DroneTech Research, killed Kaval and his entire board of directors with a well placed explosive charge. With him eliminated his ambitions to create a new line of servant-slaves perished. X, the first and last of his type that he knows of, was left incomplete. A husk of former humanity, his brain damaged to the point where emotions were dull, wisdom was weak, and electrodes and circuitry enhanced his memory and knowledge of all things implanted within. With nearing 100 identical drone-modified clones in vats waiting for test use, with only limited (but in depth) knowledge implanted into his combination of circuitry and biological brain, he used the commotion to escape in an industrial ship loaded with clone vats. Now he lived – no, maintained, on the fringes of society. Using his newfound expertise in all things related to Planetary Extraction, he spent his entirety of his being focused on the task at hand, pushing out the sometimes often glimpses of his former life.

As alarms sounded the milky whites of his eyes shifted from a planetary scan to another data panel. The extraction of metals from the crust of Ossogur III was nearing the end of its cycle. It was time to undock.
