Would you be OK with it?

Pros:

more people
more revenue for CCP means more content (to an extent)

Cons:

more noobs

EDIT:

there is now a mythical wookie that lives in the dead sea, and upon the decision of CCP to go F2P, rose up and completely fixed every problem that removing the subscription fee would cause regarding PLEX and funding. he has generously donated his 2 billion dollar fortune in goat heads and cheddar wiz to fund all further content.

the point of this is to discuss the community based ramifications of a F2P model as none of us can actually know whether a successful F2P model is possible (we don't have the accounting books)

How would people sell their PLEX?

With all the noobs complaining "get rid of gate camps" CCP might succumb to it and ruin EVE.

for money, same as always.

an in-game item that effectively converts real money to ISK is a great tool even if it doesn't pay for game time. Plus PLEXs already do alot of things besides subscription extension.

But who is going to pay ISK for something completely useless?

Why would there be more people and more revenue?
Why do you put “more noobs” in the con column?

If EVE went F2P tomorrow, there would be little reason for me to keep playing since it would be dead in less than year.

depends where the IRL money is coming from bro..

the fact of me being ok with it is deeply related to how the real money cash in is done..

Real Money = RM

RM for SP?
ouch no way..
RM of ISK
no freaking way either PLEX is right just 1 mm from crossing the line already.

RM for what then?
the clothes?
no WiS yet..
the ship colors?
not all ships are V3 yet.. and honestly not much people look at your ship except yourself..

again the fact of me being ok with it is deeply related to how the real money cash-in is balanced.

F2P and microtransactions would probably kill CCP inside a year.

Been a year or so since I looked at their financial statements but if you removed Eve's subs then I can't see how its possible to run a single shard server, never mind dev costs.

"Whatever EVE Online is doing, it’s working, though other games don’t seem to be able to follow its example making it one of the few remaining paid MMOs that could be classified as growing."

its an incorrect association to say that if EVE went F2P it would automatically stop growing. especially in this hypothetical nothing has changed.

Just because EVE is growing and other F2P MMOs are not does not mean F2P is necessarily the problem that is causing their lack of growth. see WoW.

F2p would kill eve.

There are too many 12yo who do things with my mother in local already, we definitely dont need an influx of more.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

well technically if EVE went F2P tomorrow the giant wookie monster could rise out of the dead sea and consume the world.

but since we can probably safely assume that even though the game is free people will still pay CCP money for in-game currency. an increase in players would result in an increase in revenue.

also, remember the little part of this topic that said

WITHOUT ANY CHANGES

that means no changes at all.

EDIT:

also, could we maybe get some reasons why it would kill EVE

maybe some logic. or maybe a thought or two.

even if its just a "the nooblord 12yo basement dwelling neckbeards will ruin it. I being a man who was never a noob OR 12."

It is F2P if you make enough ingame cash to support buying plexes .... [though someone always pays

So your idea is that PLEX will be used to generate a set amount of ISK, injected by CCP rather than trading it for ISK from other players.

are you insane?
imagine these completely fake numbers..

amount of $ from current PLEX sales.. meh.. 1M$/months
amount of $ from current really steady credit card subscriptions 50M$/months+ ?

without changing anything is pointless.

it's like if you work at an hourly salary + commission
and you propose your boss to remove your base salary to keep only the exact same small commission you already do.

…except that you have no numbers on the amount of PLEX that is being sold for this purpose, and how munch of their revenue comes from subscriptions.

Oh, and no, we can't safely assume that, because no-one pays CCP for in-game money — that's not how PLEX works. The reason people can buy PLEX and sell to other players for ISK is because those other players need those PLEXes to keep their accounts going. If the game is free, this demand is gone, and so is the ability to sell PLEX for any useful amount of ISK. The only thing that gives PLEX its value is that it is a representation of time. If that time is free, guess what the value of PLEX will be…?

So it's just as (or more) likely that their revenue will drop to a minute fraction of what it is, and they have to put the entire game in maintenance mode…

of course the amount of ISK you get for one PLEX would have to be indexed based on the EVE CPI Twisted

Can they do that for bounties and mission rewards too?
