Missing target in combat

Hi

New player here, I recently decided to try a bigger ship, because I was having trouble with L2 security missions with my destroyer, facing 10+ enemy vessels.

I learned gallente cruiser and bought myself a nice Thorax. I fitted it with dual 150mm railguns.

And I'm quite disappointed with the result. Sure it's more resistant, but I see a lot of "missed completely" messages during combat, and I therefore do poor damage. Even when I'm slightly over optimal, I keep missing stuff. Depending on my ammo it's about 10-15km range. Also I make sure my angular is not higher than the tracking speed of my turret.

I shoot mostly small ships (100m size). I understand there is a penalty for shooting small ships with medium guns, but I was expecting it to reduce the damage, am I wrong?

Besides that, am I missing something which could explain my high miss ratio?

Thanks!

Train up your gun support skills for accuracy and damage bonuses, and for now, try adding a tracking enhancer as a low slot item on your ship. It will help you track things a bit better, as well as slightly increase your falloff as well. You can use more than one, but don't forget about diminishing returns, and don't gimp your fit just to fit more than one.

If you prefer to use a mid slot rather than a low, use a tracking computer.

Try a web.

Slowing them down should make a difference.

Yes, a familiar story. Most of us did this before realising that bigger is not necessarily better in this game.

Your weapon support skills will not be up to par (Trajectory Analysis, Motion Prediction etc) so you need to work on these before larger weapons will be useful.

If you are looking for isk (who isn't) and still want to learn PvP you should join faction warfare. T1 frigates are where to start. Missions are definitely not where this game shines.

Zappity's Adventures for a taste of lowsec and nullsec.

As seems more and more common I agree with Lady Zap. The trap for new players using standard MMO processing in eve is hard to dodge.

1) bigger is not better
2) diversity does not open more opportunity
3) cost is not a balancing factor

These will be traps you will fall into. We all did. The question is to what degree. The best bet is to decide what you want and then plan that as a focus. Eve rewards focus and specialization far more than many people realize at first.

For example. If your goal is just being space rich then there is no reason to ever undock in anything. Station traders (give or take scams and bots) blow the doors off mission running.

If you enjoy shooting those red + though then there is a lot of information out there to make it the most efficient process you can.

If you want to shoot people and get rich doing so the FW is very good for both.

More than anything make sure you are having fun doing it. The worst trap for all beginners (and many bittervets)

4) There is nothing you HAVE to do in eve.

You don't have to run missions to learn
You don't have to be rich to PvP
You don't have to have 50mil sp to go to nul
You don't have to mine to make isk

And the list goes on and on. If its not fun for you don't bother doing it.

Yes, with a background of "traditional" MMO (DAoC then WOW), I'm only now starting to understand what sandbox means...

I thank you all for your replies,
