I've done it... Murdered my first barge

I've been working my way towards this for a long time...

An update comes out, and the miners scream, rant, threaten to ragequit. But they never do. If they did, I might have some sympathy. But all they do is ForumRage. No follow-through. Another update, and more of the same.

They show an incredibly self-centered contempt for other play styles. Sure, the Nul-Sec'ers frequently do the same, but there's a difference - Nul-Sec'ers actually get up and *do* things. On occasion, at least. Blink

Increasingly, I've been off-put by the miners whinging. More and more, I've found myself tempted to gank them. Then came Odyssey. Odyssey was too much.
I bought a stack of Catalysts.

Today, I successfully used one of my shiny-new blaster-fit Catalysts to ruthlessly murder an inoffensive Retriever. He deserved it.
He was mining all alone in a 0.5 sec space in a LoL-fit Retriever. I entered the belt almost by accident... Fumbled about clumsily, bumbled my way through the rocks, and locked him up, scanned him down. He didn't even twitch... clearly AFK with a LoL-fit in 0.5 space. He had it coming to him.
I burned him down.

I'm new to this game of Ganking. I didn't have enough firepower to finish his hull in time to burn his pod too, before Concord did for me... But I'm getting better. Soon pods will join barges on my killboard. Pirate

And that's why you should mine in a Skiff, or at least don't mine AFK.

Truth.

I wouldn't bother even trying a Skiff or Procurer solo with a Cat; too much tank, even when badly-fit. Hell, when I mine (and I do, on occasion, on another 'Toon), I mine in a heavily-tanked Procurer 'cause no one bothers.

OTOH, I've got a long way to grow in this... My skills are mediocre at best, and the best I can do is about 455dps (cold), using this build:

8x LIB II (Void S)

1x Passive Targetter I
1x Ship Scanner I

3x Mag Field Stab II

1x Sm Hybrid Burst Aerator I
1x Sm Hybrid Collision Accelerator I

Congratulations on your first kill! There's nothing like popping an AFK miner then see him rage in local ten minutes later. Once you pop you can't stop!

Congratulations. If you are ever in Sinq Laison, feel free to buy Catalysts from me - I try to seed them throughout most of the area around Dodixie to encourage emergent gamers like yourself.

I like my allies to have access to ship hulls everywhere they go, without having to do 5 jump treks to pick them up.

Thermodynamics is your friend, it should push you over the 500 DPS mark overheated, although if you're going to overheat your blasters the T2s will burn out quicker than T1 or meta items. If you team up with a neutral scout you can replace the mids with a sensor booster loaded with a scan resolution script for a faster lock and a scram.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

I don't know.. Mining in itself is a horrible and boring chore, and now you just made him mine for even longer to pay the bill for your cheap laugh.

Clearly you could have tried to pop someone that was in it for fun and excitement as well, rather than going for the lowest of the low. But sure popping a helpless miner in high sec is a rush the first time you do it, I know that.. just don't let it become an established playstyle, because it really is exactly as boring and repetitive as what the miners are doing themselves, when the initial adrenaline rush of being bad wears off.

Glad you enjoyed yourself. I have to wonder though, that Cat fit probably runs you about 10 mil just to kill a mining ship that is about 40 mil total? Is that something you can continue to do over the long haul?

So had you seen evidence that this particular miner is a whiner? What makes you think he was in misery?

Gank fine. But I don't see the need for some kind of self deluded feeling of superiority.

After all the rivers of forum tears? I think at this point that the shoe is on the other foot: A miner has to demonstrate that they're NOT a whiner.

There's no money in it for me - I'm not making a career of this, and I'll certainly need to do other things, but I've learned that I can make that cost up in about a half hour without even trying hard. So, yeah... I can sustain this as long as it's fun.

Fair points all. OTOH, considering my bumbling approach, he HAD to be AFK. Anyone actually on-watch would've seen me coming, and have at least *tried* to escape. So I don't feel at all bad about blasting him. Undoubtedly, there are greater challenges to achieve, but I'll take this as a start.

check my killboard (or lossboard! Blink )- you'll see I'm not adverse to head-to-head combat, either.

Pretty much, yeah. Have you *looked* at the fora recently? Especially around time of the Odyssey release?

Nice. That Retriever deserved to die, no doubt! Eventually you will start to notice that faction police will begin to follow you around, they may even flash at areas you warp to; before you get there (CCP?). Also you will become Kill on Sight by any and all players. Lowsec will become friendlier than Highsec. I enjoyed it and had lots of fun, but as your sec status begins to diminish and if you wish to continue ganking, you will need either friends, or a scout alt. Personally, I recommend getting in with a good group of pirate/gankers. New Order is one of those places. There are others, but their Corp names escape me at the moment.

Hope this helps!

PS: If you do decide to train up a scout/logi alt, don't forget to salvage, loot your wrecks and if anything flashy drops that too! Or just go suspect every time Pirate

I have a scout alt - But he's holding down a WH for me. Big smile I suppose I need to train another...

I haven't yet become so notorious that the Faction police are taking special notice of me. I'm not that important. Yet. Blink
I'm thinking hard on possible solutions / reactions to my eventual KOS status. I'll take a look at James and his swash-buckling crew, thanks!
