Why can't mining be Not-Boring

So I have heard that mining is pretty boring and I have to say that there is a little truth to it :P

I have a couple of ideas I believe can make mining a bit more interesting and I wanted to throw them out to the community to see what you all think about them.

Firstly, How to make mining asteroids not to be just set-it-and-forget-it operation. Well, lets say, as the ore became more and more important/sought-after/useful it could become more and more dangerous to get it. Say, because the Asteroids might be collectible and floating and cause damage if the miner isn't nimble (or is sleeping :p ). The damage they cause can go on increasing as the ore becomes more important maybe because their size keeps on getting bigger because of the very property (or properties) or the ore that makes it so valuable (e,g, malleability, magnetic field, viscosity/surface-tension/liquidity at a certain temperature etc).

Secondly, Then there could be skill based tasks that people could do or certificates that people could get which enable them to play the game in more rewarding manner. e.g. Mining Fleet Commanders who can get to a certain point in the belt and stay alive (or has a certificate) could provide bonus to ship agility/nimbleness or to ship resistances against collisions etc. Same could be done with individual players (but frankly I haven't thought about it too much since certificates aren't very well used by CCP at the moment).

In the end I'd say that, AFK mining should not be abolished but should be restricted to certain areas since a lot of people like that. But it should be optional. Belts very close to Sun or the outermost planets could be safe for AFK mining. Why ? Well obviously because of the extreme heat or cold asteroids can't become as interesting as they can in the more in-the-middle sort of zones since there is much more not-evaporated and not-frozen stuff to bind them together. (Well, you get the point :p)

I believe that this will make mining more interesting and bring up the prices of difficult to mine ores and will give something to people who are in mining to do something

Let me know what you all think. All constructive feedback is welcome.

And how will the asteroids track the value of the ore inside? They get an uplink to the CONCORD networks for the market?

There's already a skill for Mining Foramen, which does almost exactly the same thing, just with ranges, cycle times, and yields. And asteroids don't need to deal damage, that's what the rats are for.

The value of ore inside an asteroid doesn't change ever (just like now). It's just that the asteroids are of different sizes and might be floating/moving in space and are collectible.

Moreover as far as rats are concerned, generally people either use drones or get one of their friends from corp to kill the rats. That doesn't make a very interesting mining experience.

Yes, I understand there is already skills that the mining foremen uses to give bonuses however the skills I was talking about doesn't come by injecting a book but having real skills to dodge a challenging asteroid belt unharmed.

I only wish to react to this point: since EVE doesn't allow full manual maneuvering, real-life skills at dodging are meaningless.

As for the other points, you did say that the more important (valuable) their ore gets, the bigger the asteroids get. At least that's how I read it, but correct me if I'm wrong...

A 'collect all the things' minigame and a 'fly your orca to the thing' minigame are not going to make mining interesting you know.

DO you think that people who are multi-boxing 5+ characters want to manually fly?

Anything that nerfs scalability will not be welcomed by a significant portion of characters who post on forums.

Nerfing High-sec is never the answer. It is the question. The answer is 'YES'.

Dude. If I mine, it's one solo mackinaw, semi AFK. **** scalability, mining is something to do while I'm ~posting~ or doing something interesting. It's not a main focus for my attention, none of EVE's PVE is.

So nothing in my post has anything to do with you. Glad you recognize this (although I am not sure why you felt the need to tell everyone that you are able to read).

Since we are stating the obvious: your AFK playstyle is unaffected by the OP since he cordoned off a chunk of each system for you.

Yes, a section where I can mine bugger all compared with what I currently pull in.

And I was posting to point out that it's not only the multiboxed mining fleet players who don't like the OPs idea.

I did not see anything that suggests those who are AFK would get less than now. Perhaps an AFK pilot would get less than a pilot at the keyboard with this change (really depends on the way CCP implements it though regardless of suggestion) but such a disparity is common in EVE.

I never said others may not like the idea. I just said that people who are running multiboxed fleets will resist this idea.

For some people, it's already a game about drilling rocks. Your point is...?

What I don't ******* understand is why people want to complicate the hell out of mining? It is ******* mining not ******* rocket science. In RL mining isn't overly complicated. You drill some holes in a rockface, stuff explosives in the holes, scoop it up, and haul it away.

I try to be nice and mind my business just shooting lasers at rocks. There is just way too many asshats in New Eden for that to happen.

Probably because the way mining is right now, it's not even as complicated as what you just described. People like the premise of mining but they can't get over how mind-numbingly boring it is. We're not mining a rock face on earth, we're mining asteroids in space 20,000+ years in the future. There's room to be creative and engaging and interesting here.

None of the career choices in EVE Online are 'boring' if you personally enjoy or like doing them. If you don't like mining don't do it and find a career that is more appealing to you.

How about the Mass Effect 2 minigame. Do nothing/afk and you get the current ore yield... participate in the minigame using the survey scanner and target ore pockets to get 5-10% yield increase?
