Newbie looking for advice - how to get into haulage?

Hauling is a respectable profession imho, and haulers serve an important need in Eve. The contemptuous attitude towards them may stem from rich industrialists and traders thinking of how much more ISK may be made instead. But there are all sorts and types of capsuleers, and if they enjoy hauling, then that is what they must do.

As a trader, I avoid calling my clients idiots when they purchase my over-priced goods. I serve a need, and they pay for it, and I do not ask why they could not be bothered to travel one jump and buy the stuff at half the price.

Think I'm rambling now, but recently I set up >600 public courier contracts all over New Eden. Most of these were low volume contracts, and it was a pleasure to see a large number of new players involved in hauling. The service was so good, that as soon as I had finished setting up 17 contracts (my limit), about half of them had been completed, and the rest accepted.

I had interesting conversations with some of the haulers, who were into role playing, and gave me regular updates on their progress. One new player wrote me a long mail about how he had been tempted to fail a contract when I mistakenly put 600k as collateral, instead of 6m! (sent him the 6m as reward). Another hauler got into trouble when he accepted a 40k m3 contract, and could not fit it in the hold. It was great to see his commitment not to fail the contract (as I suggested), and also great to see the hauling community get together and help him out.

I prefer to use public contracts, as I can set the reward and collateral more appropriately, and it takes much less time when doing 100s of contracts. Haven't tried public contracts for null sec work though, for which Black Frog rocks.

TLDR: I like haulers, and I have great fun setting up contracts for them.

Any colour you like.

I call those people useful idiots.

They do the riskiest, most real-time intensive part of my T2 production chain, and get 1-2% or so of my profits as courier fees.

Sometimes I get really, really lucky and they fail a contract. That's a big payday right there.

If I haul for you, I know what you're buying, where you're buying it, when you're buying it, where you're building it, when you're building it, how long it takes you to build it, where you're selling it, when you're selling it, and how long it takes you to sell it. Then I use that information to buy up the raw materials and sell them to you, using the profit for my own T2 production, which I then use to undercut your order, driving down your profit. And because I do this on a massive scale, I'm also deep into into the minerals and ice products markets, which means you're buying your raw materials and POS fuel from me (profit) and paying me to haul them (profit). I'll also be making money with that freighter on other runs as I move my own stuff around. And making money even when I'm not ATK.

Any industrialist who has half a brain has a freighter pilot to save himself money and to get into Red Frog. The only idiot in this thread is you.
