I'm currently set up in a .5 space but i'm surrounded by .4 space three ways to get into my system two lead out to highsec one goes further into null. One way is camped with fights and war going one the other way is quite and only two jumps to high sec.

I'm more afraid of losing my ship with a retriver I can make enough to cover easily but the Mackinaws go for 200 mill that is a heafty price to lose it getting in, out, or suicided gankers. However is the isk/hour worth the chance of losing the ship?

Upside is you get better yield, better tank, bigger ore hold, and will rip through roids like nobodies business.
Downside is the cost, still relatively easy to squish, looks good on a killmail,, and it's slow to get into warp if someone gets the drop on you, oh and boredom, especially if you're mining ice.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

You will get ganked in a system like that at some point, however on the plus side you probably have little to no competition, safest way to mine there is get a mission and mine that.

Otherwise use a procurer and tank it don't set it up for yield.

The difference in yield is rather small - 1% per level of the Exhumer skill, i.e. a maximum of 5% more yield if you maxed out the skill.

The bigger ore hold is more substantial: 35k m3 vs 27.5k, 7500m3 more, which is about 27%. And because the ore hold only depends on the Mining Barge skill, you get the full increase right from the start. This means less trips to the station, which, depending on how far you have to travel, might increase your ISK/h by anything between 0 and 20%.

Finally, the tank. The Mack has more armor, more shields, a 20% bonus to all shield resists and 4 mid-slots, which gives you room to boost shield resists even more. (Shield extenders don't really fit, due to the very weak power grid). Put all that together and you get a tank that's more than twice as big as the retriever's. So it's twice as expensive to gank in highsec for not really more reward, except the shinier killmail.

So in short, use a Mackinaw in highsec and just play in lowsec with the retriever. But lowsec mining is something you can't really do semi-afk (like you probably would in highsec) so in that case you could just as well grab a Procurer for the extra tank/gtfo options and use that in lowsec. Yes that means you need to warp to a station more often, but a retriever is such an easy kill for anything passing by.. you'll lose it fast :)

Join a corp to your liking and fleet up to mine. Nothing says "go away" to hostile npcs and gankers like a swarm of Hobgoblin II drones. Shoot the breeze with your corpmates. Relax and enjoy.

Plus, a mining fleet is an awesome display.

A Ret is just easy to gank. You can tank a Mack well enough to make it prohibitively expensive to gank. If I was you, I'd fly a Skiff there.
