True SF, and the only film I consider scarier than "Alien".

It was mentioned at least 3 times. Maybe 5 or 6.

Best candidate for a long-running TV series: David Wingrove's Chung Kuo series. It's in re-issue after Wingrove's problems with his original publisher.

The original 8 volume work has now expanded to 20! The original told a tremendous story. Intricately plotted, memorable characters, all-too-plausible premise, at times very disturbing. Those of you who know what I'm talking about would agree. Those who don't should seriously check it out.

While I can (and often do!) quote every line from The Fifth Element, it's not the best movie ever. That title falls to Plan 9 From Outer Space

I bow before the awesomeness that is Ed Wood.

Ty for reminding me of that one - was an awesome show.

I'm gonna have to try and track it down now.

I did a while back. It's hideously rubbish. The years have clouded the memory of how truly bad this show was.

District 9, Fith element, Cloud atlas. Probably 3 of my favorites. Oh and Blade runner. That never gets old.

Maybe, maybe. :)

I remember going to Kindergarten when that show was on TV. :)

A Clockwork Orange - Mind-blowing when it first came out. I'd been a big fan of Brian Aldiss,

Anthony Burgess, not Brian Aldiss.

All of the films I consider good sci-fi have already been listed. Akira is all kinds of awesome. Moon is hugely entertaining, and I think Sam Rockwell is a massively talented and underestimated actor. Blade Runner looks great and sounds better.

The only one I would argue with is THX1138 - what a pile of steaming, angst ridden, pseudo-arthouse, self indulgent elephant dung.

So what ? Also, how do you know they didn't mean the original 1950's version ?

Also, your ability to count things is now in question.

2001 A Space Odyssey.

District 9 is good.

First Alien film, had me and the wife gripping each other on our sofa in fear.

K-Pax was so bad I just stared at it dumbfounded, sorry Thorn Galen.

This is not a signature.

Many good suggestions even only on page 1...

I'd add:

The man who fell to Earth (Bowie)
2001 (and, to a degree, 2010)

I would also point out that several of the cited stories aren't Sci-Fi...
Star Wars is Space Opera.
Several others are Science Fantasy (Dune for example).

Real Sci-Fi should be written by folk with several degrees Blink

The Wings of Honneamise. **** you Hollywood don't you ever dare to remake this movie.

Sunshine (Really, Really good)

Aliens (Alien was a kinda cool movie, but the second one nailed it. a good proof of this is the dreadful "Prometheus", godawful science fiction.)

Event Horizon as mentioned before. so far the only horror story on space that worked... and yes i did say "horror story" that includes movies, games and books.

Cypher a wonderful little gem of the early 2000's

Dark City

Groundhog Day, yes its sci fi. deal with it.

The first Matrix movie, the others were not canon.

and i'm forgetting a million more.
