I'm not entirely convinced this is going to end well. Although I suppose the definition of "well" in this case comes down to individual perspective.

You're not entirely convinced this is going to end well?

I'm entirely convinced that it isn't.

But it was, perhaps, the best thing to do in the circumstances.

I'm not sure there was a happy choice here. There's a small chance that if the Republic handles things sensibly and delicately, things will turn out happily.

How can giving in have been the best thing to do?

We didn't give in.

We refused the demand they made, destroyed the invading fleet and proceeded with operating our government and justice system the way that we planned to, rather than the way that external forces insisted. At the end of the proceedings, we decided, on our own terms, to send Broteau to the Republic.

You merely see two identical outcomes, but I see two entirely different paths leading up to them.

Nice to see that the Matari bashing snark continues unabated.

No, sweetie, this is Republic bashing snark. They made themselves unpopular.

When we get to the Matari bashing snark, I promise to send someone to wake you up so that you can come and shriek 'racist!'.

Well if you wish to convince yourself of that of course, but the fact remains that the Minmatar now have him. I suspect you'll never get him back now and will have to content yourselves with 'Matar "justice".

Oh, we're playing the race card when people call things out as they are. How about you go try assaulting your allies again or something equally productive?

Two Federation officials should be allowed to observe the Sebiestor Tribe's trial. It's only fair considering we allowed the same to them.

Apparently referring to roughly 25% of the galactic Minmatar population (the Republic) is the same as referring to all people of Minmatar descent.

And we're the big scary imperialist who think they control everyone Roll

The Federation executed one of their admirals for treason in a public and gruesome way. The Republic invited cynicism after the incident in Colelie. So what does it matter who has him in custody? He is either going to be executed or die in prison.

The Federation acted accordingly to customs of interplanetary law, mostly. Crimes against Heads of State have always been granted extraterritoriality, both by custom and by law, and although this wasn't only a crime against a Head of State, justice demands that the Republic be granted their right to judge him for that crime.

It must be left to the diplomats of both nations to decide if the punishment Broteau deserves both for homicide of the Prime Minister AND of the Gallente and Minmatar citizens will be served appropriately by the Republic.

I personally believe that, considering the severity of the crimes, the Republic's sentence will easily contemplate the needs of the Federation's penal sovereignty.

In last case, an supra-national court will be established. But I don't think that would be practical, or even needed.

As i stated somewhere else:

Implant him with one of the mercenary implants and make him live out a life sentence for every life he took. Put him on a rock somewhere doing hard labour for a few centuries. In harsh conditions that are incredibly miserable, but not deadly. Death is a little thing.
