Import/export of settings! - How do you want it to work?

Hot key setups. Also bookmark organizations (not the BM's themselves, but a mapping i.e., BM with name X goes in folder Y). So if I delete my entire user preferences or install on a new machine, the bookmarks will appear sorted. I have over 1,700 bookmarks in EveOnline. Last time I had to do this was very painful.

I would envision this as going to Esc --> Settings Menu with import/export buttons that launch a path browser to an XML file or a save location for an XML file.

I would give them a url to download the XML file for importation. Unless a time comes where they are server stored, I don't think I could link them in a chat window.

I think other folks have a good idea about questions 1 and 2, so I'll limit mine to question no. 3 - I would like something similar to what has been done for the ship fitting window. I want there to be multiple "corporate" overview setups that you can attach to each tab as wanted/as needed, as well as "personal" settings, all of which also can be snagged from a drop down menu on an as needed basis. All setting should be exportable to an XML file.

Now, as I wrote this I was assuming all you meant was the overview settings.. or do you mean that we might soon have a customizable UI as well?

Hi!

First of all, include into the import/export the tabs that are missing: Filters -> State, All subtabs in Appearance tab, Columns, Overview Tabs. If all that would go into the export file, it would help a lot. Right now you import your settings and manually do all the other stuff. For ALL your accounts and characters.

In the long run server-side settings are a thing everybody wants. Ability to apply the same settings across all your accounts is priceless.

Being able to drag and drop the settings of one of your overview tabs into a chat window, and have someone else be able to save that and apply to one of their own overview tabs would be....very, very awesome.

im using 8 computers to run my chars.
One of the ways i can make this work for me is window positioning.

This is a PITA with 8 (x 3) chars.

All of it - preferably selectable by areas - so - tick the boxes for overview, fittings etc etc.

Export files - let us choose where to save it - and what to name it - so we dont have to go hunting through some obscure wineserver tree to find the files.

Export to file - mail file - import file.

Option to auto export every x amount of time would be handy too...

1) What settings would you like to have stored?

  • Window locations (relative to nearest corner, thus a window whose bottom left corner is in the bottom left corner should stay there when the screen is resized)
  • Window sizes (absolute, or relative to display pixels?)
  • Nested/tabbed windows
  • Open/Windowshaded/Minimised status (Windowshaded is when you double-click the title bar to shrink the window into its own title bar)
  • Docked windows (eg: selected item & overview will typically be docked)
  • Overview filters, open tabs, selected overview settings
  • Bracket filters, active bracket filters
  • Palette status (ie: system info, incursion info, faction warfare status, route display: open, collapsed, closed)
  • Tracking camera target location (stored relative to my ship position, not top left of screen)
  • HUD location (top/bottom, offset left/right from middle by percentage)
  • Bookmark folders
  • Graphics detail (middle column in ESC menu graphics settings)
  • Keyboard shortcuts

2) How would you expect the synchronization (import/export) to function? What would the interaction be?

With no interaction from me, logging in to the game as character X should update the local settings for that character automatically. When I update settings locally, they should be synchronised to the server before I get disconnected.

Ideally, when I log into a new computer I should be looking at a client that is configured as closely as possible to my previous computer. The finer points of graphics such as shader settings and resolution should not be stored, since these will change depending on video card, CPU, attached monitor.

It would be nice if I could specify resolution ranges for saved settings too, so I can save my settings separately for ultra huge widescreen of 3 x 27" monitors versus 11" MacBook Air. Then when I am running a selected setting and modify things to tweak the layout on my virtual cockpit, things won't break on my laptop which I use at work for chat and skill queues.

I might want to have saved settings that are different for exploration versus mission running versus lowsec combat, too.

Then to use shared settings:

  1. Receive a settings voucher
  2. Right-click, select "Import settings …"
  3. Apply my own name for these settings
  4. If necessary, resolve conflicts in saved overview settings

To use settings from out-of-game:

  1. Open the settings handler
  2. Select "create from clipboard"
  3. Paste into the text field
  4. Define a name for this new settings set

3) How would you go about sharing settings with other players? (directly or in-directly)

Save them to a in game voucher item similar to bookmarks. Allow this to be handled through item exchange and courier contracts just like bookmarks. Then when I want to share settings:

  1. Open the settings handler (from what menu? No idea)
  2. Indicate the settings that I want to share
  3. Select the components of that setting that I want to include (eg: just overview, brackets and palettes)
  4. Save the indicated settings to a voucher

As an option: right-click the voucher and select "Copy to clipboard". This will allow sharing and editing of overview settings through out of game means.

These are just some basic questions to get the discussion going. Feel free to add any more within the realm of sharing/import/export of settings.

1) Shortcuts - Primary.
Overview - Secondary.
Other settings better to leave for build's options.

2)Export-Import, simple text. Compatible with all builds if possible.

3)No.

Right now people need to copy build files from CCP\Eve save in order to miiror or save their settings.

Can I export character creation settings and import into a new alt at the time of character creation please?

Whatever is done with window saving/restoring/positioning, please allow for multiple profiles based on different system resolutions, perhaps with a merge option.

My laptop is 1440x900 and my desktop is 2560x1440, and I play the same characters on both computers at different times depending on where I am. The "optimal" window layout is very different between these two systems.

I've always thought it would be good to have buttons on the settings window for:

"Backup settings online" - one shot upload of current settings

"Apply settings from online" - applies settings backed up online

"Restore last settings" - before applying settings from online storage a local backup is made which can be reloaded with this button

More features would be nice but that would give the main functionality that would be useful to have.

would it be possible to get an export / import UI settings/window locations and so on also. fixing everything in place for 4 accounts is kinda anoying and then there is the thing when you play in windowed mode that the chats and other things move around abit every time you log in and fix the screen to position. Just an idea...

When you export overview setting today, you don't get all the information exported. You should include everything in the apperance tab. I also would like you to store this both server side and let me store it on my computer.

All personal customizations should be stored per character on the server.
Its distressing that a NEW client-stored setting has been created for Odyssey 1.1: custom scan probe formations.
You need a User Data API that any new feature can call, to store newly created settings, such as this.

-1 Boo! I use two different PCs regulary, not saving server side FTL! Fail!
EVERY SETTING should be persisted server side, I simply do not understand. :(
I agree they really should be. I play on two computers as well so I feel your pain. We used the standard way we save settings this time because it really didn't make sense to make a special setting that was persisted on the server. We should solve this problem in a general manner but it was way out of scope for this little iteration.

Be able to import/export contacts..... PLEASE....

People who LOVE their empire wars like myself love to be able to add EVERY single person from a given corp/alliance so we can see how many are online & use locators etc..

and just like in other space games. movies and tv shows or anything of that nature you generally see someone say like "Yeah I'm forwarding you the data now" or what ever. so only makes sense that we should be able to export contacts and then send them to someone else if needed xD.

would be an awesome feauture and could be used for more then just empire wars although that I think would be the main use of it.

I am sure 0.0 alliances could use it to share a list of enemy "Titan / Super" pilots rather easily etc.. and im sure theres more uses for it as well.

How I'd want it to work?

Just import like a XML sheet or TXT? and be able to export it as well.

Maybe have it tied to that nifty little file core_char_# that is the end all save for all GUI settings, including every window with its columns. Just a thought.

Its kind of annoying to try to remember where that file is located every year when you (CCP) put out a patch that resets ALL GUI settings, so then i have to grab my backup and try to remember which EVE folder windows has that particular setting saved under.

1) Drone groups, neocom ordering, window sizes, snaps, overviews, module key placements, module grouping, orbit, keep range, shortcut keys, log settings included onscreen message positions, and finally hud preferences. I recently got ganked out of all my settings, can you tell?

2) It should be much like how you bring up fits in the browse fittings menu. It should be a new menu window where if you click the highlighted settings file, a box will show on the left showcasing some attributes.

Ex.
you have so and so many drone groups, so and so many window optimizations, so many module slot customizations, it will say how many ships you have custom orbit and custom keep range. Under overview it will list the names of the tabs you have stored. Also, how many shortcuts you have defined vs default shortcuts. Basically a brief summary of the settings expressed in numerical order. You should also be able to affix names to these setting files too for better organizing.
The location of the new settings menu should in the drop down list for overview settings. That would be the best spot to hide it I believe.

3) The whole entire thing should be sharable to anyone. Maybe you can have a share tab - enter name field in the new settings menu window that I proposed.

*4 There should also be an automatic backup done after each safe quitting of the game. So, on every exit you last settings has a recover point in the event you have a memory wipe. The option to revert back to a backup settings file should be in the escape menu next to the cache clearing and default options.

XML serialise ALL the things!

I think import and export from inside to outside, outside to inside the client should be just plain old XML. Not sure if one exists but I'm sure it wouldn't be long before a 3rd party app appeared, might even be a neat use for CREST I.e. you join a corp, you subscribe to their fitting service using a crest app et voila, you get their stored overviews.

It would be nice if we could treat overview settings like location bookmarks, have them shared and available at corp and alliance level. Alternatively, you make fleet level overviews an option that the FC/WC/SC can set on behalf of their subordinates which appears as an extra tab on their overview.

General opinion vibes with much of what has been said, couple of tiers should do the trick, got some laying around since they where taken from ships :)

Char specific - window layout, open channels, overview etc etc. stored on the server, exportable to XML
Account specific - stuff the launcher does (that auto play tick box plus whatever else it's doing) plus keyboard layout, shortcuts etc
Client machine specific - graphics, sound, displays, recent account list

Cheers
