Eurydia what makes you think that? If it's the high losses numbers, it could be, not entirely sure, be related to not having a skip button. As I've mentioned above having a skip button presents its own problems and potential abusing, but not having it people will just click random image if they don't like either avatars in order to see next results.

what i mean is that i sort of get the feeling that some avatars are being sniped here and there because they have high wins. intentional downvoting to boost points for someones alt or to help solidify the position of a favorite avatar near the top by taking points away from the competition.

hmm.. I put this on feedback, but I like to be pushy and mention it here too :)

I've changed my avi awhile ago.. different from the one you have from the old database and would love if we had a delete/resubmit option for our avi's.. maybe so you can change it every 6 mos/year:

thanks for doing this :)

There're some issues with rating, that's for sure. You had one of my alts there from the day of announcement of the site, who has only 32/8 win/loss ratio, for total of 40 ratings while some avatars that showed up much later can have well over in 100+ as total.

Also seen lower win/loss ratios in higher spot on the top100. Not to mention seeing some that do not even belong to top100, not just top20 - Sansha Kuvakei, anyone? Roll

Overall the rating system can be abused easily. Just like any voting system I guess Smile
Plus it's random anyway, and if a mediocre avatar gets paired vs someone like https://gate.eveonline.com/Profile/lappeen%20Rannasta more times than you, it will end up in top20. I suppose F5 solves the issue...

Fun site, and yeah, can be addictive, just needs more polish plus more complicated voting system.
I.E. higher rating avatars get paired with higher rating avatars only.

hmmm, while rating pics I definitely saw an imbalance in number of times I would see the same avatars. some I saw 5-8 times while others only 1-2.

I think that the top rank is too volatile to be of use. What's the point to have 2 characters on the top 14 when next day they're not even on the top 100 b/c they weren't matched enough and didn't got any points?

Of course, in the long run, the top scores will become unmovable once the averaged top 100 rankers have been picked, and that would be bad. Resetting the score system periodically should be necessary, also as a way to clean up avatars that got modified to the worst once they reached a high ratio.

Maybe the score could be historical and ranked by weeks, like "Week #33 top rank", "Week #34 top rank", etcetera, with "monthly top rank" and even "year top rank".

Also anotherr efinemnt to amtchign algorythm could favor newer characters (with the current one, they're gonna be matched at the same pace as characters with an accumualted high count of matches). Maybe the site could track the median (not average but median) amount of matches per character and give the under-median characters a boost in matches, like being offered for the next (median -n) matches.

Let's say that median are 35 matches and a character is new and only got 3 matches, the algorythim picks it and delivers it to (35-3= 32) different IPs in a row so he's matched 32 times and meets the median. This process should be done cyclically, say, once every x total matches (1,000 matches? 5,000? -what it takes so happens roughly once an hour).

Some new changes as of today:

  • Character data will be loaded once per Home and Top 100 pages. Moving back and forth between pages will now be instantaneous.
  • Report button (intended for characters with no avatar, so please try not to abuse this button)
  • New characters will have their images saved locally. Depending on where you live, but from here, I've noticed a dramatic increase in loading time: 70ms vs 575ms on average for 256x256 avatar. I will find a way to move existing 1200 characters to use locally saved images but for now they still use CCP's images server. This change affects only newly added characters.
  • Skip button (bound to s key)
  • Slide-in animation for avatars
  • Link character names to their detailed profile page
  • Added lots of error handlers, so server shouldn't crash as often anymore. There was one pesky error where wins count was set to NULL and it would cause a crash server. I am still not sure why that happens, but at least it won't crash the server again for that reason.

@BoSau Hotim: All avatars up until today were retrieved from the CCP server. It was always up to date. After today images will be stored locally. In the next few days I'll make sure that images are updated every 24 or 48 hours to synchronize with your current avatar which may or may not have changed since then.

@Tanthalassa: I too have noticed that some avatars are showed up more than others, but I promise it's all random. I don't really have an easy solution to fix this problem. But this could be fixed at the expensive of slower response time.
Right now when Person 1 opens the website, his/her browser has data on all 1200+ characters. If Person 2 opens newedenfaces.com he/she also has data on all 1200+ characters which does not depend on the choices of Person 1.
If I were to make it so that everyone gets displayed equal number of times, server has to be in charge of deciding who gets to see what. So instead of loading all characters at once it has to send 2 characters at a time, which involves one or two database calls each time someone votes, and then when they vote another 2 calls to database.
So yes it could be done. If it's possible to achieve similar performance as it is right now I will do it.

@Tanthalassa(2): I have thought about pairing high-rating with high-rating and low-rating with low rating. It's easily doable too. My only concern was it would be come a bit difficult to select who to vote for: What if you are faced with two good looking avatars, who do you choose P: http://www.newedenfaces.com/characters/916857044 vs http://www.newedenfaces.com/characters/1100933456

@Indahmawar Fazmarai: Very good points. I do like the idea of tracking median votes in order to help new characters. But for historical ranking I think it would only make sense if it had different character sets every time. Else it will be just a matter of luck who gets in the top ranking for that given week/month. Or someone would just be consistently in the Top ranking.
I'll see what I can do about the median rating matching.

if anyone else has some feedback on the ranking and voting system please do let me know. If it's significantly different (for the better) perhaps it would be a good idea to reset ratings for all characters to get everyone a fresh start.

Thanks again for all your comments!

Taking down the site momentarily to push the new update:

- Bug fixes.

- Update Avatar button: it will fetch the latest image from CCP servers and store it locally in the database. For existing characters, it converts existing URLs to point to the database instead.

- Removed ELO rating completely: leaderboard is now sorted by the win/loss ratio which I find to be more accurate representation. This is a step in the right direction. The next step would be to normalize votes by the median of wins + losses. Currently the leaderboard favors new players, because they will usually have a high winning percentage, especially if it's a good looking avatar.

- Added notifications: just for the Update Avatar button for now.

I wasn't able to reproduce the bug. But yeah that shouldn't happen. There were some recent changes to how wins and losses are updated, so that hopefully fixed it.

But I did find another bug that would cause players with 0 wins or 0 losses to be ignored completely when being voted. So that should be fixed.

By the way, sorry guys for taking it down so often, this update process takes 3-4 minutes, and if there is a significant bug in the system I think it should be fixed as soon as possible.
