It doesn't tests who are the best avatars, rather it tests whether internet users are jerks. Shockingly, the answer is 'Yes, internet users are jerks'. What?

kind of why I stopped going to it. I started to feel like that for every legit vote I cast a dozen troll votes were simultaneously going on lol

The crux of the issue is competition. The outcome would be very different if the site displayed 3 avatars simultaneously and the question was: "are these 3 avatars attractive?" If the answer is yes, each avatar gets 1 win, if not, gets nothing.

Jerks would always say "yes" in order to provide wins to ugly avatars, but even then really good avatars would get more "yes". Saying "no" would not harm the characters, as only +1 would count towards the score.

Also, certain avatars would be set up as IP traps. The site admin would pick certain ugly avatars and then the site would deliberately offer them each now and then, and any IP saying "yes" would get a internal negative score. After a certain amount of negative scores, the iP would be dismissed and their scores would not be counted again. Of course, the IP wouid not be notified of this.

There are now over 9000 characters (up from 3700). If you see a mismatch in gender please report it by clicking on "Wrong Gender" button.

What is the deciding factor for the ranking? Is it the Win-Loss ratio or the overall number of votes?
Reason I'm asking is I added a character a while back, she has a ratio of 72.9% but less votes then most other characters. She still doesn't appear in any rankings, not even in the bloodline ranking.

Another thing I noticed, why is Ash'ale (not my character) No 1 in the Minmatar female ranking but not even in the top 100 overall?

It's sorted by wins then by the winning percentage. So even though Ash'ale has a higher winning percentage, she has less wins than characters in Top 100. This was done so that new characters who can have a 100% winning percentage with only 1-2 votes don't end up on in Top 100 in front of characters who have hundeds of votes.

So in other words if I add a character now, he/she will never catch up...unless you do a reset. It's a bit unfair, don't you think.
If you use the winning percentage as factor, yes a character with 2 votes and 100% will be on top, but surely not for long as the number of votes increase, at least it would mix up the rankings a bit more.

It is the way it is because in the past there was a problem with the solution that you'd like to have. A constantly fluctuating leaderboard is not a very useless leaderboard.

I just added a new section "New Faces" that displays characters in the order they were added to the site (newest characters on top). It's just a little something to get new avatars noticed. This change is not live yet, but will be sometime after christmas.

EDIT: Found a really a nice face from the pile of thousands of new characters: http://newedenfaces.com/characters/90621110

EDIT 2: I think I just found Celeste Taylor's twin sister Smile: http://newedenfaces.com/characters/94149054

The other Ila was number 1 for about a week in a previous iteration. Now 43%, that doesn't seem right.

oh, no! lolol.

that's not how I meant it at all. just that the site is, for all the fun it can be or has been before, it's just that. a site. it really doesn't mean anything who is the "winner" or highly ranked.

too funny. I can see how what I said could be taken that way looking at it again though lol

I agree. The busiest I have been in NEF was back during that "previous matches" era when she was the top Ni-Kunni. Great looking character. I feel as though that was my favorite list, and I think Celeste tended to drift just around that top14 cut off through most of it. I still stand by my "locked opponents" theory, since a few of my favorite characters (mine and other peoples) have not made it to the top 100. There are also some matches like Ugly Douchebag and Rok Tar who are locked together, ensuring that they both stay around 50% despite both being hideous. I usually hate bagging on other avatars, but it is clear both were designed to be very ugly.

I think we have seen some major ethnic leanings with each iteration. I remember a time when CCP Soundwave, Private Panikan, Kin Ha, Sajuuk Brutor, Seam Daigon, Militant Barbie and a bunch of other darker avatars (back when I voted a bunch) filled the top 14. I think there was also a major Sebiestor and Achura bias at one point. Looks a bit Euro for the top 14 at the moment. Not quite sure what to make of this, but it is something I noticed.

Oh, and yes December is my newest character and considering the resemblance despite being an Intaki decided to use the Taylor (half sister?) name. I think my Civire, Luna (who doesn't get much use) might look a bit more like Celeste and is the second of the Taylor half sisters. I love how the character generator does not restrict your appearance to your bloodline.

lot of us have cycled through the top 14 at some point. I was in it for a good long while and my alt alyxandra was persistently in the top spot race for a long time, too. but I finally stopped visiting the place when it seemed that 1. corruption was rampant and 2. the site was down A LOT for some reason lol. then I got a new computer and lost the bookmark (not that it should have been hard to remember) and just stopped visiting.

Chances your character is probably locked in against a better looking character. I am not keeping track of previous matches anymore so I can't verify that. But I do remember that other lla, I always voted for her in the past.

That did sound like a snarky comment, implying her avatar wasn't ever going to be in Top 100 even after reset. Smile.

The website has been stable for the most part lately. Occasionally it crashes and doesn't come back up automatically. I am still working on making it more stable, but sometimes it feels like nothing I do seems to fix it. So it could be the Openshift hosting provider at fault here.

I am surprised that December Taylor hadn't been added earlier. Nice avatar! I still have a full-body customization available from that time when CCP gave us all a free re-sculpting, so I might re-do Nova and go for a different look Smile.

Lots of reason for ethnic leanings. Could be new visitors, but I think the biggest factor is the number of avatars has dramatically increased. Back in June there were only about a 1000. A lot of characters have changed their appearances as well. Or perhaps because there were so many iterations and resets some people don't want to vote for the same avatars they used to vote anymore.

Another big possible reason is gender matching. That might explain the female gender bias in Top 100. Maybe people vote differently female vs female than male vs male?
