More than two years ago Adivah has announced the Babes of New Eden project that lets you vote for your favorite avatar side-by-side. It has quickly gained popularity in the EVE Online community. Shortly thereafter at least two other similar websites showed up. None of them seem to be active anymore.

Well, things are about to change now! Over this past weekend I have worked hard to create a website that loosely mimics functionality of the original Babes of New Eden project.

The project is still in its early stage, which means I need your help. If you find any problems with usability of the site, please leave a feedback so that it could be fixed and improved over time. Moreover, if you have any suggestions for new features or rating algorithms, don't be shy. All feedback is welcome.

There are over 800 characters currently pre-loaded in the database as of this moment, so go ahead - add your character and start voting! [:p

UPDATE 1
Upcoming features:

1. Improve matching algorithm - currently some avatars show up multiple times in a very short span, while other avatars aren't being matched at all. That's randomness I guess, but it would be more fair to have a system that will go through all character pairs before allowing the same person to be voted for again. In other words if I have 800 characters, after the first vote, there are now 798 characters in the system to be voted for, and so on, until the count reaches 0, after which results are shuffled and the count starts from 800 again.
2. Male vs Male & Female vs Female voting - that was the initial goal but because public API does not have Gender property access, I have to solely rely on the honesty of people that submit new characters. To add counter measure for people that Male characters as Female or vice-versa there should be a REPORT button to report potential abusers.
3. Remove winning percentage progress bar - as some of you have pointed out it creates a bias; someone with a high winning percentage is more likely to get picked by other voters.

I need more feedback on #2. While #1 is an improvement to the system, #2 seems to be slight deviation from the current implementation. Would everyone prefer to have Male vs Male, Female vs Female vote matching? Or are people happy with the current "equal-opportunity" voting?


UPDATE 2

1. Removed the winning percentage bar - see above.
2. Characters are randomized once per page session instead of every single time you vote. This should result in minor speed improvements.
3. Search bar now handles case insensitive search, additionally as you start typing it will give you a hint of possible characters that start with those letters.
4. Character IDs are now used for URLs in place of Character names when you visit the detailed character page.
5. Added Disqus comments, now you can leave a comment on any of the 900-and-growing character pages. So be sure to post how much you love/hate some avatar. Yes you can post as a Guest too if you'd rather remain anonymous.
6. UI enhancements to the Logo text, Thumbnails, Detailed Page.
7. Added User Rating box where you may enter a decimal number 0 through 10 (similar to Rate the avatar above you thread). The number that is displayed under the avatar is the weighted average from all users who voted.
8. Improved matching, now after each vote those 2 characters will be removed from the queue, so you won't see them again until of course you refresh the page. While it is possible to have absolute control over this on the server, it will dramatically slow things down if I have to synchronize the character queue with every single person every time they submit a vote. This is good enough for now I think.

Note: New user ratings are there to compliment existing voting mechanism. So you may now search the character and rate them as you please. Leaderboards are still sorted according to the Elo rating.

UPDATE 3

1. Clicking on a character name on the home page will link to the detailed character page.
2. Lazy loading characters data - moving between pages won't force the browser to get new data every time, which results in better performance for you and less stress on the server.
3. Report button - grey avatars don't belong on newedenfaces.com.
4. Save all images locally to reduce bandwidth on CCP servers, then have a background service that update all saved images every 24 or 48 hours.
5. Report button (intended for characters with no avatar, so please try not to abuse this button)
6. Skip button (bound to s key)
7. Slide-in animation for avatars
8. Link character names to their detailed profile page
9. Added lots of error handlers, so server shouldn't crash as often anymore. There was one pesky error where wins count was set to NULL and it would cause a crash server. I am still not sure why that happens, but at least it won't crash the server again for that reason.
10. New characters will have their images saved locally. Depending on where you live, but from here, I've noticed a dramatic increase in loading time: 70ms vs 575ms on average for 256x256 avatar.

Thanks everyone. The latest update as of this morning fixes some issues with the footer when website is viewed in Firefox and Internet Explorer.

And here are some interesting statistics:

- There are now over a 1000 characters on the website!

- 19,458 votes have been cast in total already.
