Faction Cruiser or Assault Frigs?

Hello. I'm currently using an Omen Navy Issue, and it's been awesome for me. Unlike most other laser ships I've used, I'm loving the fact that it has a huge range bonus, which makes up for the short range laser turrets seem to have when I'm doing missions.

I've always found it fun to fly Frigates, so Assault Ships sparked an interest in me - particularly the Retribution. I did a little research about it, and everyone says it can do level 3 missions well, but right now I'm doing them in my Navy Omen...

So my question is... would a Retribution be so much better for L3 missioning compared to my Navy Omen? I've considered things like the fact that the Omen has drones to deal with faraway targets, and also that it uses medium turrets which have longer range and better damage, but I'm still having a hard time coming to a conclusion since I've never flown a Retribution and am not sure if it might actually dish out as much damage.

Anyone have some tips on the matter? I'm kinda stuck on this because it will influence whether I get Assault Frigs or Cruisers to V.

Both ships should be able to do lvl 3 missions though they may not be the most efficient.

The retribution is a fun little ship but would probably do less damage than your navy omen. Though it is faster, more agile and uses light lasers with good tracking. It should be enough dps for lvl 3 missions and even lvl 4 missions if you have the time and skills (tech II lasers for example) but I wouldnt recommend it. I've done those mission in a retribution just for the fun of trying, not to get them done :)

Your navy omen is a cruiser with medium lasers. They do more damage than light lasers but have worse tracking. That means it could have a little trouble hitting frigates who orbit you fast. Though, you have drones to counter those.

Generally people are doing lvl 3 missions in a BattleCruiser. It has more damage potential than your omen and still uses medium guns (mostly) which is good for tracking cruiser/battlecruiser type ships. And they have a much stronger tank, you'll need it for the more difficult lvl 3 missions.

May I suggest you look into the (navy) harbinger? The navy version is recently released but could make a great mission ship!

If you want to stay with cruiser hulls you may find the tech III cruisers to be quite good. They have massive damage potential and yet they are still as agile as your omen cruiser. You need cruiser V for them and you need to train all the subsystem skills too, might be a little more training before you board those ships. For Amarr there is the Legion, and it's well capable of doing lvl 3's and 4's very efficient.

Well here's the thing - before I got my Navy Omen, I was trying to do missions in a Harbinger. I soon found out that the Harbinger has a crappy range and is extremely slow, so I kept having to get within range of everything, which took forever and gave them time to hurt me way too much. :(

Then I tried using a Prophecy, which was AMAZING after I got my drone skills up, cuz I could hit things all over the place. But it was kinda boring, and searching my way back into a laser ship, I saw the Navy Omen had a range bonus, so that's really the only reason why I got into it (other than the fact that it's the best-looking ship I've flown so far).

The Navy Harbinger looks awesome too, but I feel like I'd be back to slugging my way around space trying to get in range. But still, thanks a lot for the tip! If my Navy Omen really does more damage than a Retribution, I think I'll be sticking with it. Plus if I invest into fitting it properly, it'll help me out when I get into a Legion someday.

Harbringer with beam lasers can easily get a 20km optimal, which is respectable and fine for L3s.

If you're using pulse lasers than yes, they have limited range (unless using Scorch ammo). They are the short-range laser weapons.

Missioning with Amarr I used a Harbinger then an Abaddon to great effect. They are slow, but they will blow the crap out of everything without moving.
