I saw similar but not exactly the same idea as i have in the common suggestions so im posting my idea.

For pilots that lost skill points to dying in ships like the strategic cruisers or because you forgot to update your clone, you would have the possibility of spending ISK on an item and that item would restore a set amount of lost points, so if you lost a lot of points you would have to buy several or even many of them.

(i wont specify what the item is because i would like it to require several professions to make so as to add something new to the economy as well, i will say i dont like the 'tags' concept for getting back security status so i wouldnt want it to be a 'tags for skill points' situation).

Yawn,  I'm right as usual. The predictability kinda gets boring really.

No...

You forgot to update your clone and lost SP's? Well then you'll remember next time.

Don't want to lose SP's from a ship loss then Strategic Cruisers aren't for you.

-1 and what is this obsession with total amount of SP's these days?

This game has a problem with retention of players and a very slow growth rate for a game of its general quality. It is rules like permanent skill point loss that push people away from what is otherwise a great game.

The 'tough luck' attitude to the game in some aspects like ganking, scamming etc seems great because you can recover from those losses with a bit of work but a permanent set back like skill point losses only frustrates players and i can't help be believe hurts the game overall.

I can see your POV on this but if you were silly enough to undock before checking your clone then you deserve to lose the SP's in my mind.

This would also remove the "Risk" associated with flying Strategic Cruisers and diminish the "Elite Pilot" status some people consider themselves when they are flying them.

Keep your clone up to date and don't fly a Strategic Cruiser is you can't afford to lose it in ISKies of SP's.

EDIT: I don't think it's Skill Points that doesn't retain players, it's the complexity of EVE and the learning curve is extreme. It's the top end of it's type because of this and we don't want to be like WOW where you can buy SP's, get back SP's fight and gain SP's. We train hard, we fight hard and we have gone from strength to strength in numbers over the years.
