Sudden lag when I turn on Shield Boosters

Everything runs smooth and fast on all my ships, and all windows. That is until I turn on Shield Boosters. As soon as I do that, My CPU jumps up 63% and pegs all Cores to 97%, and all my frame rates drop from 60 FPS to 0.71 FPS.

i7 2700 Quad Core - 24GB RAM - 2x Nvidia GTX-450s in SLI mode.

Any thoughts or ideas would be most helpful from anyone.
