How can I tell if I can fly a ship

I think one of my alts can fly a jump freighter. But I don't own one and the new prereqs suggest I still need to train.

Other than buying one and tryign to board it is there another easier way to see if I can fly it?

Check the info on the ship you want to fly. It will list the skill prerequisites. If your character has those prerequisite skills (just the top-level Primary/Secondary/Tertiary skills, not any additional prereqs for those skills), then that character can fly the ship.

Thanks but I don't think that works. The primary skill is the relevant racial freighter skill to 4. I didn't think we needed to train that.

Why not? I'm not saying you're wrong... I know nothing about JFs. But that's as far as I know how it works, so what gives you the impression that it's not?

Freighter 4 has ALWAYS been required for a JF. Of course it is not required to inject the JF skill.

CCP considered making level 5 since all T2 are level 5, but they didn't wan't to give out that many skill points.

Ok I'm going to make this as easy for everyone to understand as I can.


1) Start up Eve and log into the character in question.

2) Pull up the Market.

3) Navigate to the ship in question (on the Browse Ship tab, or "Groups" tab via search function).

4) Check the page that shows the little skill book next to the image for the ship in question.

5) If it's GREEN you can fly it (hint, you already injected the top level Skill book).

5b) If it's RED you still need to train skills to inject the top level Skill book.


As a personal example, I have Gallente Freighter LvL 3 but only have Adv SC LvL 3 (it's 5 now for T1 Freighter). I can actually sit in and pilot a Gallente T1 Freighter but I don't meet the prerequisites to INJECT THE SKILLBOOK for Gallente Freighter. Since I obviously have the Gallente Freighter skillbook injected then you guessed it, I can fly the thing post Odyssey.

Easiest way is to look up the ship in the market. Right below its name is a skill book icon. If the icon has a red background, you cant fly it. If it has a green background, you can fly it.

Not to hi jack this thread but it is about the same question as his. Before the expansion I had all the skills to fly a sleipnir, it is my favorite ship to fly after all Big smile. However I haven't bought or flown one for about two weeks. Now with the changes I am missing everything except skirmish warfare from the leadership tree to fly it.

TLDR I have all primary but missing leadership secondary skills to fly a sleipnir. Should I buy one and see if i can fly it before making a petition. Or is it working as intended where they gave everyone whacked out pre reqs if they could fly it before?

TL;DR is the EXACT problem with everyone today. They can't be bothered to read the Dev threads saying over and over "if you could fly it before, you can fly it after" and all the players spinning it different ways. I guess you just can't teach stupid.

I looked in evemon and it shows I can still fly all the Command ships, with no further training necessary. Then If I look at the skill book tree, it shows the pre-reques still as red and untrained, but the Command ship itself is blue.
(Yes, I did actually check out my Astarte first thing)

For those of you who have the Command skill injected, that is all you need.
The same would hold true for Jump Freighters, Carriers, and a host of other ships. Skill injected; good to go.

This kind of thing also happens when you get podded and lose skill points on a pr-req.

I did read the dev blogs, I knew about the changes, and I get that I am supposed to be able to fly them. My question was if they did this change so that you no longer required secondary skills. Which is a legit question to ask considering it mentions no where that they are going to let you fly a ship without needing all the required skills.

The market also shows a green skill book so I can assume that I can fly it. Now my question is why CCP decided to half bake this change so that you can fly ships without secondary skills. A few reasons why this is a bad idea.

1. It is confusing as you have always needed all the required skills to fly a ship. Yes the in game information window says "required"!

2. Why give every racial command ship and battle cruiser without all the required skills. Sure it is the easiest thing to do but now I have to train for 43 days if I want to get rid of the weird requirement not matching up. Honestly I would rather have the leadership skills and only be able to fly one command ship as I trained Minmatar Cruisers V, not amarr, gallente, and caldari cruisers V. So in essence I got free SP, cool! But not in the way I figured the change would take effect. And I Could Not fly all the other racial command ships so why can I now? That is not what they said...

3. This little loop hole undoubtedly will lead to future bugs and mishaps. It has happened in the past with countless other things. I would rather have this issue addressed now. Problems like the overview being reset, boot.ini, and countless other mishaps happen, fix this now! So that I am not stuck unable to fly my main combat vessel of choice.

I guess if I wanted to I could train 43 days worth of leadership skills I don't plan to use and hope they make boosting more of a role other than fleet bard. Btw calling people stupid because you "assume" they don't know what is going on. And "assume" what they are asking is the same question that has been answered before. Really only makes you look stupid. Thanks for the reply anyways I guess. Though next time perhaps you could show some respect or dignity so not to belittle a stranger on a public forum. Unless you want people to expect that from you.

They did it this way so as to avoid giving out free skills. The skill changes they actually made to your character (destroyers/BCs) didn't actually give you any new abilities or make you better than you were before--they're just an accounting change, essentially.

When they change the prerequisites though, if they were to give out all the new prerequisites, a lot of people could've ended up with a lot of free skills that make them better than they were before or allow them to do things they couldn't do before.

The only thing the ship hulls care about is the first line under each of "Primary|Secondary|Tertiary Skill required". That's it. If those are green, you're good to go. Everything else is a nested list of requirements for injecting those skills, provided purely as a convenience for planning if you don't already have them. They're not letting you fly ships without the required skills.

Look at the Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, Quaternary, etc. skills, only the one at the top of the list (leftmost). If you have those skills, you can BOARD the ship.

If you want to INJECT a skill, you need ALL the prerequisites required by that skill.

Example: Amarr Archon Carrier

Before Odyssey:
* Primary: Capital Ships 1
* Secondary: Amarr Carrier 1
* Tertiary: Jump Drive Operation 1

After Odyssey:
* Primary: Capital Ships 1
* Secondary: Amarr Carrier 1

No other skills matter TO BOARD.

So basically all the level V skills I'm lacking are recommended but are listed as a required secondary skill? Why bother listing them there when they can simply put them in the "recommended section" of the information window. This is what has me confused. The idea of listing more skills than needed to sit in the ship seems odd and out of place.

So now I know I can fly it. I still lack the comprehension to why they are listed as "required" its not like there is a tutorial or wiki that explains this. I've looked...

The key word you missed in my post is "each". You need to look at the first line under each of Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, etc. Those are the skills that are required. The rest of the skills nested under them are neither required nor recommended to fly the ship. They are the skills needed to inject the required skillbooks, but are totally irrelevant if you already have the required skillbooks injected.
