Noob exploration- where's the ISK?

Hello,

With the new expansion I decided to try farming data and relic sites, just like every other swinging Johnson was today. Finding a system with fewer than 30 people in local was half the battle.

I tried high sec
I tried low sec
Some I cracked successfully the first attempt
Some it took me a couple tries with my T1 gear and low level skills.

Question- am I missing something? I'd have made more ISK running L1 missions even without salvaging. I don't think I made 1M an hour. Was it just bad luck? Is it only profitable in 0.0? I did fail some attempts due to T1 gear and bad luck, but even with T2 I can't see how it could possibly worth the time and effort.

Bad luck, too busy, most money is in the combat sites.

Missions and Complexes would be a more appropriate forum.

Thanks for the reply.

Given thet my ship wasn't equipped for combat I searched out and found relic and data sites. I got a lot of worthless data sheets, carbon and crap salvage. Bad luck perhaps, but I have to wonder why the new hacking mini game if there's no ISKin it, even in low sec.

Maybe I just had bad luck. I honestly don't know.

I did 2 datasites in hisec just to see how the stuff works, with terrible scanning / hacking skills.
Got 2 decryptors from both sites + some random bpcs and junk, around 17M for the trip.

There's ISK in it, even in highsec. What there isn't is consistent ISK. Exploration is a gamble.

I believe that there will be a lot more available for your skill level in a week or 2. What I have been doing is scanning down every site and working them just to learn the new mechanisms. No, the ones left that I get a hold of are not valuable (unless you need carbon for contract scams, or hydrogen batteries), they're just homework at this time. I suspect a lot of other folks are doing something similar as well.

You were just unlucky. Exploration is not consistent ISK. It's the lottery.

In nullsec relic sites can net anywhere from 50-600m per hour and sometimes even more if you got a lucky streak on sites.
This is just after the patch with "old" prices I guess they're gonna change.

All this considers that:
- you can fly through the whole region so you can always get the respawns
- it's not too crowded
- your gear/skill is good enough to hack fast and safe

This also not includes time spent on hauling the stuff to Jita.
Since Odyssey hit I've spent around 10 hours scanning and made around 1.5b ISK in salvage and decryptors not counting faction bpcs etc.

Data sites yield less but seem to give faction pos bpcs more often?

I have no insight in lowsec/highsec but I think higher difficulty sites in lowsec should have quite good yield as well.
