No, they are not - they spawn everywhere.

The issue what you probably have faced is that you have a lot more explorers than you had before. That being said, you was probably tagging along behind bunch of them, hence you have missed sites. If that's not the source of your problem, then it could be your settings (filter settings in your probing window - check those up before anything else).
