Aspiring FW piolot - help with Merlin setup

Trying to get into a bit of pvp for a change, but my Merlin setups seem to fail in most fights.
Can someone explain to me why I took more damage than my Merlin opponent in this 1 on 1 fight:

http://eve-kill.net/?a=kill_detail&kll_id=18060833

There's no scram or web or my setup, because I wanted to just test out if it could tank a bit of damage. But obviously my opponent had a better setup, or did something different than me. Are neutrons the way to go?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Evemail me and I'll send you some pvp fits when I get online tonight (near DT).

You could speak to Sean Parisi or Taoist Dragon and apply to one of their corps and you will have lots of help learning frigate pvp.

If you want to find out the fit of your opponent you just lost to is, checking the killboard for their losses is the easiest way. No guarantee that the flew exactly the same fit, but many pilots fly identical or very similar fits often.

In your case I found a loss of the pilot that killed you with the following fit:

Quote:
[Merlin, Kesi Raae's Merlin]
Damage Control II
Magnetic Field Stabilizer II
Micro Auxiliary Power Core II

Medium F-S9 Regolith Shield Induction
Limited 1MN Microwarpdrive I
J5b Phased Prototype Warp Scrambler I
X5 Prototype Engine Enervator

Light Neutron Blaster II,Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S
Light Neutron Blaster II,Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S
Light Neutron Blaster II,Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S

Small Core Defense Field Extender I
Small Core Defense Field Extender I
Small Core Defense Field Extender I

This fit does a tiny bit more damage than yours, but you have significantly more EHP, so assuming perfect behaviour and identical skills you should not have lost this fight.

Your choice of ammo is probably not optimal, Void S has less tracking than CN Antimatter. You would usually use Void S against larger targets or in cases where you can minimize tracking issues.

Other factors that would have let your enemy cause more damage than you are different skills, overheating weapons and possibly him using long-range ammunition and keeping a bit at range. You should always carry some Null ammo for enemies that keep at the edge of scram range.

Other factors might include a booster alt in system to crank up your opponent's resists and/or maneuverability. Also, as mentioned above, Void is a bit more situational; I've found it useful when I can set up for an engagement at optimal range, and hit my opponent with a scram and a web to reduce his potential transversal.

Good advice above. Also, it's always a good idea to have a look at your logs after a fight if things haven't gone as expected. I'd warrant that for a lot of it you were doing little or no damage which could have been due to tracking or range. Void is generally a poor choice of ammo and you'll feel its deficits even more if your skills are not al lvl5.

Void and no means of controlling range is probably why you lost.

Thanks for all the great answers!

I think I'm beginning to understand how this didn't go my way, even with the "turtle" setup I had.
Going to try changing ammo and test overheating (totally forgot about that).

I'm going to throw these ships out there until I finally kill something :)

Over heating your invulns can add quite a bit of ehp.

I pretty much never use plain tech 1 mods like your shield extender or your invulns. Those slight edges often make the difference in pvp.

Make faction war occupancy pvp instead of pve https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=53815&#post53815

Looking at the situation further, your opponent could more easily dictate their optimal and slow you down (Increasing damage application). They we're using Neutrons giving them a slight DPS/ Range Advantage. This could of also been another factor in the fight.

Basically, go full gank.

Also Void is terrible, EFT DPS does not equal Applied DPS.

You made quite a lot of newbie mistakes there.

No tackle mods. In case you are actually winning a fight you want to prevent your target from running away.

Using void. It has shortest range and worst tracking. DPS gain is only seen if target is cruiser or larger or heavily webbed (aka going very very slow).

Meta 0 medium shield extender. Don't just don't. In some cases meta 4 is a bit expensive, but you can always drop to meta 3 stuff. (if you don't have skills, isk and available grid and cpu to just use T2).

That is indeed just a worse version of your Incursus fit.

Genos and you can use the first one you posted with a pseudo (hench not making it sillly expensive).

But seeing how he is a newbie i decided to post a setup that doesn't require genos.
