How Important are Faction Ships?

My goal for this character in the near-term (~6 months out) is long-range projectile weapon combat so I am planning to train up through the Minmatar ship ranks; however, in terms of Mission running and Faction grind, I wanted to join my friend who prefers the Caldari look-and-feel.

I'm content working for the Caldari so long as this doesn't wreck my chances to fly critical Minmatar ships later on.

So, are Factions-specific ships vital, or are they mostly aesthetically-enhanced versions of regularly available ships? Will I be hamstringing my plans to be a Minmatar pilot by working for Caldari-based corporations?

There is nothing stopping you from working for the Caldari, and using Minmatar ships for completing the missions. Agents don't care how you get the job done.

Navy ships are improved versions of tech 1. Pirate ships are also improved, but require two races of ship skills to pilot. [Tech 2 are specialized ships.]

I'm a Caldari pilot, and I work for the Caldari, Amarr, and Sisters of EVE. I use whatever race of ship I'm in the mood to use (I can pilot nearly all).

faction specific ships just means different fitting layouts, hull bonuses and prerequisites.

As far as I'm aware there's no mechanic in this game that requires a certain faction's ship to do anything.

The only thing "faction-specific" about faction ships is that they are sold in loyalty stores by NPCs of that faction.
But once a player bought it from the LP store, they can resell it to everyone on the market, so, as Tau said, there is nothing preventing you to fly that ship.

Head straight for the Firetail in your case. It's getting a 25% extra damage buff tomorrow plus extra ehp.

I recon every second ship in the war zones will be a RFFT for a few weeks now!

Only really certain types of electronic warfare (of which only the Caldari form, ECM, is widely used, although I personally am quite partial to harassing opposing fleets with a Celestis).

I support the New Order and CODE. alliance. www.minerbumping.com

OP, could you perhaps be confusing faction standings and their possible effects on where you can go later (you can fly any ship you can buy regardless of who makes it) with faction ships / modules?

Your faction standings have nothing to do with what ships you are able to fly. You can train to fly anything you want. If you want a faction ship and don't have the standings or LP to get it directly from the faction, you can just buy it with ISK.
