question about market orders I saw

I was on my station trader in Jita when I saw some strange orders. Somebody was posting buy orders for single units of multiple commodities - including mining crystals and some other things you would expect multiple unit orders. Oddly to me, the buyer was paying 1k-10k higher than the next highest buy order.

Can anybody explain this tactic to me?

I have just looked at these items, and the order is not insanely higher buy price than the ones below it, especially given the price difference between buy and sells on those items.

I have no idea why you want 1 of each T1 mining crystal, but, the thinking behind it is, the people with orders for 227 of them will just wait for his order to fill, as its for 1 item, and the price is not worth panicking about.

Alternatively, he could be hoping to pick up a load very cheaply, as it is likely they will be delivered as more than 1. so he may be hoping the seller uses advanced sell order and he can pick up the overflow without worrying about fees, but at those prices, I doubt he is worried. (By the way, this has already happened with some crystals, so you can pick some up cheap if you are fast!)

Are those overflows the reason that some of those buy orders have a corresponding <24 hr sell order with a price near the buy order price? I noted the cheap prices you mentioned.

If I'm overstocked in an item and the price is falling, I'll often post a buy order for one unit halfway between present buy and sell prices, to try to get the 0.01 ISKers to overbid me (then I'll dump my whole stock on their buy order).

Of course my buy order will be located in a dangerous or tough to reach system in the same region, such as the Rancer or Egghendle stations.

That was my thinking too. An attempt at price manipulation. My guess would be that the seller had a stockpile that they wanted to sell quickly and they were looking for someone to overbid them into a fair price so they could dump it instead of putting up a sell order and racing to the bottom.

I would have thought so too, but, the price was only 1-10k above buy order, and the sell orders were 100k above that

It's still probably a strategy to induce a bump in the buy price. Sounds like someone trying to test against botters. If the item isn't being cleared, then it's obviously not high volume and someone is probably just wasting their time.
