Hi, I am quite new to EVE, I have been salvaging in my Noctis but lately I'v been moving towards the mining profession. Naturally I am starting out in a Venture, now with two miner II and two mining drones plus a bit of other stuff. I have been sticking to 0.9-1.0 belts so far but I am wanting to go lower than that, enter rats.

My question: Can 2 Hobgoblins deal with 0.8 rats, or do I have to sacrifice a miner II for a turret??

short answer yes. Ideally where ever you mine use the t1 drones for that area rats. IE warriors for minmatar, Hornets for Caldari, Acolytes for amarr, Hobgoblins for Galente.

Some will say just use goblins but you actually do more effective dps with the right drones.

True, except for Acolytes. In which case you want Hobs. And against Serpentis, where you actually don't want Hobs, you want Hornets.

Thx for the answers, I'll go with hobs for now then, and aim for t2 minmatar warriors later:)

Dont fear them 0.5 - 1.0 rats as they are pathetic, 5 T1 Hobgoblins are all you need.

IIRC, yes two hobgoblins will work in 0.8.

"Faction" spawns (Dread Guristas, Dark Blood, True Sansha, etc.) spawns towards .5 can be a bit of a pain if you're barely able to use T1 drones, but if you can use T2 lights and have at least drone interfacing 4 they shouldn't be much of an issue either.

That said if you're really lazy the only time you find hobs to be decent if not great is when the local rats are Angels. Angels have a hideous thermal resist allowing them to giggle at Gallente drones like a drunken Catholic schoolgirl seeing her first undersized... Titan.

Only problem in drones vs hisec beltrats is that they pull agro sometimes when left out.
If you launch them after your retriever / whatever gets attacked you are 99% fine.

(1) T2 ANY Light Scout Drone will kill ANY belt Rat in 0.5+ with decent enough skills, it just might take it a bit. So (2) T2's will have zero issue, remember the OP said he's in a Venture and it only has 10m3 Drone Bay. Having decent Drone skills are always a good thing as about half the ships in Eve use them to some extent.

At least someone was paying attention.

OP, dont remove a mining Turret, the ship is built to mine not shoot stuff. The drones are for shooting stuff.

2x t1 drones are more than sufficient for keeping your venture alive i found in the very brief period my alt was in one. it may have a little trouble dealing with a triple rat spawn in a 0.5 but meh, for the 7 or less days that you'll actually be in a venture i wouldn't worry about it.

Short answer yes.

Longer version:

You want support drone skills at 4 specs at 4, dps difference is really huge.

Hobgobs are still overall best drones in pve (blaster drones) but Hornets are deadly evils too with far better engagement range and good tracking/speed.
For pvp Warriors are above most of others because of average ships resist profile, Amarr ones are bad, really bad.

Anyway you should run quite fast over the T2 versions and get the support skills at 5, drones high skills can make the difference in many situations from pve to pvp, EWAR drones are also a must have for pvp.
