Streamlining Skills

Today, we face a problem. Skills are so unorganized, so poorly conceived, and otherwise a pain.

Let's take for example: Large (Turret Type) Specialization. It is, without a doubt, very important for battleship pilots to have. So why then are you required to train Small and Medium turret skills for over a month to use Tech II Large Turrets? I thought CCP was moving away from that approach and making it easier to specialize (for example, removing Assault Ship skills for the Heavy Assault Ship requirement).

Not only that, but many skill requirements are completely and totally redundant. For example, many large and capital turrets require Gunnery V as a secondary skill, despite the fact that Gunnery V is already required to train the primary skill. Large Tech II turrets are the worst offenders, as they require three skills to use: Large -General- Turret IV, Gunnery V and Large -Turret- Specialization I. Gunnery V is required to train Large -General- Turret IV, and Large -General- Turret V is required to skill up Large Turret Specialization I. It just makes for a really long and pointless list of skills.

My prescription for the new requirements? (Note, I am using placeholders)

Large Blaster Specialization <-- Large Hybrid Turret IV
Large Hybrid Turret <-- Medium Hybrid Turret III

Medium Blaster Specialization <-- Medium Hybrid Turret IV
Medium Hybrid Turret <-- Small Hybrid Turret III

Small Blaster Specialization <-- Small Hybrid Turret IV
Small Hybrid Turret <-- Gunnery I

Do we need more skill requirements? I don't think so. Those who choose not to use the skills are losing out on effectiveness anyway. If anything, we need less skill requirements. And as such, I further recommend for ALL skills:

1. Compound redundant requirements, because they are completely unnecessary and redundant.
2. Reduce or eliminate irrelevant requirements, because they hinder specialization for new pilots.
3. Reduce certain requirements, because they are already important enough to justify training up.

OP's Idea.

So you don't need to train Frigate to get into a Battleship either? Just straight in with Cruiser IV then Battleship I?

Skill paths are there as EVE isn't a short term game and it actually helps players to learn how to "upscale" from a Frigate into a Cruiser and then into a Battleship if that is their path. Pretty much the same with weapon systems where you can't just hit the uber of weapons without first "learning" how to use them efficiently.

I really don't think we need "Express Skill Paths" as this would take away some of the learning that people get from the different classes. Specialisation is exactly that: You're a Specialist\Expert in that area and you've dedicated your time and effort into being one.

A RL example would be: A Doctor is operating on you who got their GCSE's, skipped A-Levels and getting a Degree and just spent a year getting a PHd. I don't want that person operating on me.

-1 from me, sorry.
