CSM and the new launcher

Provided that the new launcher, botched launch aside, has removed the iconic animated login screen and, as long as i am aware, that was not hinted nor discussed at player level, I would like to know wether the CSM was informed/asked about this change and what may veteran players think of getting rid of a "sentimental value" feature in such unceremonious and -as far as I care- gratuitous way. It's not an issue that anyone spent any amount of time on AFAIK.

Because really, this smacks of "I hate change". It's just a launcher, dambit. Its function is to launch the game, the end. If it was a plain text console, you'd still be complaining about "nostalgia".

Dearest OP.

If you want to see the login screen that much, launch your client using the exefile.exe, dont use the launcher.

However this launcher - once its issues are smoothed out - can be seen as a first step to easier character switching especially in light of the upcoming addition of dual training, so to give up a login screen to start down that road, is a little price to pay.

It's good to see the CSM so accurately representing my views on the loss of the beautiful splash art and music that made each expansion unique. Perhaps we could do away with graphical upgrades and music as they both clearly frivolous to the business of staring at asteroids and market screens.

I am not really a veteran player, as i really started playing about 1 month ago, but I cant understand why you would want to get rid of something that evokes so much flair, even if it is only for a short amount of time. And it sets the right mood, especially for players that are new to the game.
I can only compare them with the login Screens for WoW. The Ice Crown Citadel with the Frostwyrm flying in the background, the Deathwing dragon glancing down on you from the crumbling towers of the city he layed waste on a moment ago, or even the huge monumental catdog statues with crossed spears from the MoP expansion.

And the Retribution login screen (since it is the only one i really know) always evoked the feeling of this huge universe that is hidden behind that slow moving asteroid and the slow moving space station, ready for me to explore.

If it is just a login screen, why not just keep it somehwere, between launcher and char select? Why dont they want to keep something simple like this that can easily attract people or awake their interest for such a game in the first place? Or maybe even awake those feelings again? It is a method that can easily captivate people like me, that are interested in lore and all the epic stuff that can happen with a universe, a black dragon with metal plating, 2 huge statues. Even if the magnitude is not as great and fascinating as the actual player might picture it in his fantasies about the game.

I couldnt care less about the launcher itself, it is just a launcher. It is annoying that i have to wait about 1 minute to get from the launcher to the actual char select, staring at a black screen with a slowly moving loading bar. Once the problems will be fixed, it may be better than the old one. But to me this does not justify that they got rid of that fantastic animated login screen.

If i browse a book store for possible books i might be interested in, i also look at the cover if it could interest me. If i dont like the cover i may not even open the book to let the content convince me. If this would be the case, every book would just need some sort of parcel string to keep the pages together and some bown packing paper to protect it from dirt.

I have logged in.

Honestly, whenever CCP make a major change it's always the smart play to just be patient while the inevitable initial bugs are worked out. It took me about 10 minutes to encounter the non-working launcher, read through the response thread, try the direct eveexe thing, have that fail, try running repair.exe, that worked, problem solved.

(Certain un-named corp members flipped out and raged on mumble, deleted their EVE installations, redownloaded the client and got logged in just in time to see the "OK now it's working, sorry about that" announcement.)

Let's put this in perspective: a few thousand people experienced mild inconvenience logging in to one video game for a few hours. This does not merit a monument-shoot.

Yeah, I was frustrated for the ten seconds it took me to realize this isn't a big deal, and that if a slight inconvenience in a video game patch really gets me riled, then I need to reevaluate my life.

Agreed. This isn't about the bugs and the bugs don't really warrant an outrage. This is about how the players value the login screen.

There's a bunch of small, but annoying, issues that indicate that this new launcher never went through any real usability testing. Hitting tab to move between fields resets the login field, the EULA dialog opening for every single account after you restart the launcher. etc.

They should revert back to the old style launcher untill they fix the issues, and the CSM should be fronting those issues against CCP.

Consider the fact that 'a few thousand' (that we know about) users had problems is actually an appreciable fraction of the playerbase when the total (TQ + Serenity) playerbase is around 500k subs.

I am slightly concerned about the CSM's reaction to this. Please remember you should be listening to what people want now, not telling them to HTFU for disagreeing with you.

CSM 7 talked to CCP about the launcher almost a year ago. Many of the issues that turned out to be problems were raised back then, and clearly they were not all addressed.

As a member of the CSM, you should re-evaluate your tone and the way you presented yourself here.

Also as a member of the CSM, you should not immediately dismiss valid arguments and offer substance in your rebuttal beyond what essentially is a "deal with it."

This new launcher was released without warning, broke use of the game for pretty much everyone, and continues to have usability bugs which are glaring and shouldn't have even seen the light of day. User workflow was abruptly changed for the worse, and furthermore, the launcher offers only regressions in terms of features that were once available.

As a CSM, you should be communicating with CCP on these matters and relaying what you can between the rest of the user population and CCP internal developers instead of penning insolent replies such as the one you have here.
