problem with multiple clients

Hi,

I've been running two clients on my MBP Pro since years now. Most of the time without problems (apart from speed Twisted ) but since this Spring I keep running into the same problem again and again after client updates or OS upgrades. Most recent time now that I was forced to upgrade to 10.6 (laptop was repaired and reinstalled with 10.6.8 while I had 10.5 before).
So, after getting everything back from time machine, the 1st eve client runs fine and normal. The problem is the second client: no matter if I open it with 'open -n' from a terminal or with the icon in Applications folder, it always opens the launcher rather than the client directly, and the launcher always tries to do a full download and reinstall of the client. If I let it, it corrupts the 1st eve client and that one doesn't run anymore and needs a full clean reinstall by itself.
It used to be that the 2nd client launched the client without going through the launcher but no matter what I try I can't get this to work anymore.
The installation I use is exactly what is described under the 'Duplicating EVE Online.app with Symlinks ' section in this eve wiki and yes, I have also changed Bundle name and PrefsFolderName attributes in
/Applications/EVE\ Online2.app/Contents/Resources/EVE\ Online.app/Contents/Info.plist
to a new and identical name for both fields.

Any ideas for solutions? And yeah, before you post it, I won't install bootcamp Cool for various reasons not related to eve.

Thanks!

I use the clonemaker

http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Multiple_clients#Using_the_EVE_Clonemaker

I got 3 accounts, so I make one clone for each account. The only time I run the main install is when there is a patch. A few notes:

You do not need to remake the clones after a patch.

When a patch does come in the clone asks if you want to download a new build. No, do not do that. Just quit the clone and run the main install. The launcher will do the update.

By always playing on a clone you protect the main instal. If somehow eve royally screws up and corrupts files, it will almost always just get the files of the clone. You can toss the clone, its Application Support files, then make a new one in just a few seconds. Much easier than downloading a new client. Also you should always have a copy of your overview settings someplace safe.

Thanks, that worked. It seems the clone maker does the easy and kinda obvious thing: it creates a new application but apart from cider itself it only creates symlinks to the original. I guess the drawback is that you don't get a different preferences folder on each clone, compared to the method described on the wiki. But hell, I can live with that. At least I got the 2nd client to work again!

Actually you do get different prefs folders. Look where they are kept, there will be one for each clone.

I am sort of confused as to why you would do this. I have a shortcut (or alias) on my desktop and I just open another instance of EVE after the first one launches.

I have been able to run multiple accounts for a couple of months now.

Start the day off slow and taper off from there.

I only have the eve install once and i run 3 alts. all I do is start the launcher 3 times it works fine. No clone copies of the game

Cloning allows you to keep different preferences. If all your accounts use the same size, resolution, graphical quality, overview, chat channels, etc., then you don't need cloning. If you want different preferences preserved for different accounts, or even two sets of settings preserved for the same account, then the clones become useful.

If two clients try and modify the prefs files at the same time havoc can ensue. Having separate prefs files is safer. Also sometimes eve somehow messes up the files and will no longer run at all. If that happens to your main install you may have to download an entire new client. But if its a clone you can make a new one in seconds.
