Help regarding the margin trading skill

Hey all..

Need a little help understanding the margin trading skill.

My understanding of this skill is that when placing a buy order you only require a % of the require isk in your wallet for the buy order (depending on what level you have trained)

I have noticed a number of times when placing a buy order it seems to want the entire amount and not a percentage of the buy order amount.

Is this skill bugged or am I not understanding how the skill works.

Many thanks

It sounds as though the buy orders you place, when it wants the full amount, are orders that can be filled right then and there. The skill does not "give you" ISK.

When you place a buy order at a price below the current ask price, the sell price on the market, your ISK is put into escrow. When you have margin skill, less than 100% of the total amount is placed in escrow. However, at the time of purchase, the ISK is taken from your wallet and from escrow.

For example, suppose you have 100 ISK in your wallet, and you have margin at lvl 5. On the market, you see something selling for 200 ISK, but you think the price will come down to 100 ISK. So you place an order to purchase it at 100 ISK. 25% goes into escrow, leaving you with 75 ISK in your wallet. Now a few days later, the price drops to 100. Your buy order gets filled, so the 75 ISK from your wallet and the 25 in escrow gets taken, and you get whatever it was you were buying.

Now for example, suppose the sell price was 100 to start with, and you wanted to buy it. So you place an order at 100. All 100 is taken from your wallet and you get whatever it was your were buying. In this case, no margin skill applies since your order was filled right away.

Its legitimate usage is to allow you to have a very large number of buy orders without all the isk to cover said orders. On the theory that they will not all be filled at once.

Or to have a very expensive buy order which will not be filled quickly (EG Guardian Vexor buy order) and not have the entire amount tied up in the order.

You'll notice on your wallet tab there's Total in escrow (XXXX) additional amount to cover (YYYY)

You can play with YYYY until it gets used filling your orders.

Okay so an update..

Been using the margin trading skill fine since this post (thank to those who answered) however hit another snag and I am at a loss.

I am trying to place a buy order for an item which has no sell orders, however when I do it wants the full isk and the margin trading skill is not kicking in.

I would of presumed that since there are no sell orders that would mean my buy order could not be filled, hence the margin trading skill would kick in.

Do you have the "Advanced" or "Simple" buy order window open?

And are you putting in the buy price you want, or leaving it as default?

Also, what duration do you have on the buy order?

Do you have any filters turned on? Like ignore low sec or something like that, and you are doing a regional order? There might be sell orders you're not seeing perhaps?
