So ive started Level 4 missions in my Mega but I'm having nothig but trouble with some of them (the Assault / Pirate Invasion being the two ones im on at the moment vs Angels)

My current setup is:

[Megathron, Proto Mega]
Magnetic Field Stabilizer II
Magnetic Field Stabilizer II
Magnetic Field Stabilizer II
Armor Kinetic Hardener I
Prototype Armor Explosive Hardener I
Prototype Armor Explosive Hardener I
Large Armor Repairer I

Cap Recharger II
Optical Tracking Computer I, Tracking Speed Script
Sensor Booster II, Targeting Range Script
Large Micro Jump Drive

425mm Prototype Gauss Gun, Antimatter Charge L
425mm Prototype Gauss Gun, Antimatter Charge L
425mm Prototype Gauss Gun, Antimatter Charge L
425mm Prototype Gauss Gun, Antimatter Charge L
425mm Prototype Gauss Gun, Antimatter Charge L
425mm Prototype Gauss Gun, Antimatter Charge L
425mm Prototype Gauss Gun, Antimatter Charge L
[empty high slot]

[empty rig slot]
[empty rig slot]
[empty rig slot]

Hobgoblin II x5
Hammerhead II x5

I'm having a real hard time of it, I can snipe the frigates / destroyers from a decent range (if i switch to Iridium) but cannot deal Cruiser sized Rats, the Hobs and Hammerhead just take forever to kill them by this point 15 minutes or so has passed on one wave.

Any help would be appreciated. FYI my skillset is at http://eveboard.com/pilot/Elenefreya

The fit itself is fine, most of the problems come from your skills.

The first thing that I see is the problem is T1 tank, that's unacceptable in a BS you really need to train T2 tank (Hardeners and Repper). I see that your gunnery support is okay, but another glaring problem is Gallente Battleship L2, you should really train that to IV as next priority. Third flaw in your skills is your cap skills, get Energy Systems Operation and Energy Management to IV at least, preferrably V

Rig your ship! They are cheap compared to the cost of the hull and will go a long way to help your efficiency. I'd go for some capacitor control circuits and some auxiliary nano pumps. I'd suggest you blitz L3s with a Brutix or Myrm in the meanwhile while training theses skills.

As for some tips to deal with L4s, The Assault has heavy ewar so be sure to fit a sensor booster (I see you've got one), use the MJD to get range and shoot from smallest to biggest (Frigates>Cruisers>BCs) try to stay out of their range and use long range ammo if you're having trouble tanking. You might want to try to wedge an Afterburner on there to keep range from the rats after MJDing.

Edit//
Also the mega is going to change into a more dedicated gunboat so if you plan to continue using the Mega make sure you focus on hybrid skills first.

and there's another flaw in your skills though not huge, train Drone Interfacing to at least III! You already have the prerequisite and it gives 20% to drone damage essentially giving you an extra drone per level of the skill!

The mega only works with good gunnery and drone skills vs angels, even if you use the mjd to get away with the low tank, you will struggle to deal enough damage before the rats get into a tight orbit. If you really want to try, you could swap a mfs for a TE and fit a 2. TC and get some sentry drones to improve the overall applied damage at medium ranges. If you have T2 rails, T2 guarde and good support skills it actually gets the job done reasonable fast.

Noted, ill add this to the skill plan after i get BC5

at the time I didnt have the money for the rigs - theyre on the list to buy next.

I'll have to stick to the Ferox as its all i got :)

No room for an AB (core skills problem clearly) even with the SB i still get dropped below 30kms in targetting which is no good for 425mm's - perhaps I should up my magnometric skill

I'll add it to the skill plan.

Jill, you nailed the problem in the first sentence, thanks for the input.

Dont use medium drones btw, they die far too quickly.

Also im assuming you're fighting against serpentis: sensor damps arent affected by any kind of anti eccm. There are only 2 ways to counter it:

1. Fit sensor boosters (not very effective)

2. Fit MJD and shoot outside range of their damps (much better).

Demote yourself to level 3s in a battlecruiser for the time being, you don't want an embarassing loss on your return to eve :p

I cannot stress enough packing 4 sentry drones and 5 light drones instead of using heavies or mediums on the megathron. Sentry drones are often ignored by NPCs, and when they aren't ignored they can easily be pulled back in if/when they start taking damage. If you slap a remote shield booster in your remaining high slot (or remote armor rep) you can also "drone tank" for awhile by letting one of your sentry drones field all the incoming shots while you rep it.

That said I wouldn't really recommend flying a megathron for missions right now. In a month the hyperion will probably be a somewhat better platform unless you really need the tracking speed bonus. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=223610&find=unread The hyperion's going to do slightly less gun damage, but it'll be able to tack on a launcher if the pilot really wants to eke out every last scrap of DPS, field 5 sentry drones and hold them plus 5 light and 5 salvage drones in its newly expanded drone bay while the megathron will be limited to the standard 75mb/3 a lot of battleships currently have, down from its current 125mb3. It'll do that while also packing more raw HP.

The navy megathron will still be a good choice if you really want a megathron hull for doing missions, but what it has over the hyperion in base HP and fitting (4 mids 8 low to the hyperion's 5 mids 7 lows, 10% more CPU, and like 275mw more grid) will be somewhat lost due to the hyperion having better gun-based damage.
