Miners: Why do you mine?

I mine because it does allow me to do house work between cycles. I can read or fold laundry... in fact, I've gotten good at vacuuming the house a cycle at a time. The money I earn helps pay for my accounts. The minerals go to corp construction or are just sold off for isk.

then too, I could make the arguement that mission running is nearly as repetitious. I haven't seen a new mission in years.

  - remove the cloaked from local; free intel is the real problem, not  "afk" cloaking -

I mine to keep my towers in isotopes, depending on what mood I'm in, it's steady isk, but it requires plenty of chars to do it. Normally I'll have 7 macks, an orca, and a iteron V to haul, I could probably make better isk running L4's and buy the topes, but meh, once an industrialist, always an industrialist

I have OCD and it is enjoyable watching those asteroids diminish bit by bit until they are all packed away neatly in my ship.

Also it is a bit thrilling knowing that every time I see someone new appear in local it might be some fat neckbeard coming to suicide gank me.

As a sister post to my Missioners: What is your goal? , miners, why do you do what you do? The people who actually sit and mine, not botters. I dabbled with mining myself but it was usually a spur of the moment thing for a period of 3-4 hours early morning due to lack of sleep.

What makes mining interesting enough to you that you do it days and weeks on end? Large scale miners who operate multiple accounts feel free to chime in as well. Even operating 6 hulks and an orca, you are still doing the same tedious task of scan rocks, target rocks, shoot rocks, just more of it to the point where this once low attention task requires more attention due to the volume of work that needs to be done. Is this something you enjoy doing concurrently while watching a movie, or reading a book? If so, why not just enjoy the movie or book and drop EVE from the equation? Saves you 15 bucks a month. What is the draw in doing this menial task even if it is at the same time as something more interesting?

Again, as stated in the Missioners post, this is not a flame / troll / bait of miners. Even though my viewpoint is that it is a waste of time, this is not someone else's viewpoint, this is not someone else's opinion. I am curious as to why this entertains you, the miner.

Industrialists who mine their own minerals "because it's free" need not reply. Incompetence is not a viewpoint.

I guess the overall feeling of being productive is my motivation.

I mine to relax. Its nice slowpace activity in eve, compared to for example 0.0 roams or running missions.

Got 2 hulk pilots + orca booster, yes i do take them even to icemine time to time...Cool

Also sometimes manufacture things, but my mining dosent cover minerals needed even close.

We are Minmatar, Our ship are made of scraps, but look what our scraps can do...

What is your motivation In posting in a forum like this and trolling some of the responses.
What makes you want to do this? Is insecurity in yourself and a need to feel superior to others by means of putting them down??
Even though my viewpoint is that you are waste of skin, I am curious as to why this entertains you, the troll poster.

No point in answering because obvious bait post is obvious

My motivation, you small-minded fool, is to spur conversation into something that I was curious about as I was bored. A forum is a vehicle for conversation about a topic, this is about mining in a section where mining is relevant. I am asking the mining community why they do what they do. To me it is a menial and boring task, but to others it may not be, and I'd like to see their logic. So far I've gotten two decent answers and the rest are just some jaded people who seem to have a hard on hate for conversation.

I consider myself a hardcore miner/industrialist. I have now 6 active accounts all with main characters as miners plus rorqual/orca pilot with max skills and implants. Why do it you ask? I started minning when 100 mill an hour was easy and i have stuck with it. The hum of the lasers, talking to good friends, building what i use. Its a frame of mind that i find relaxing. Wondering where i would stand on total tonnage mined?

A vehicle of social interaction and mindless entertainment to relax? Seems fair, no different than shooting NPCs or farming item X in another MMO.

Why do you make the ISK? Just for the sake of making the ISK? Become wealthy in a virtual world, just enjoy having ISK?

EDIT: Reading this post again makes it seem a little judgmental. It is not intentionally so.

Don't worry, I didn't feel judged Lol

I only have enough isk to cover a rainy day, although I'm starting to do a bit to make some more isk so I can expand my collection of blueprints, but that's away off. I've got some isk tied up in assets like a rorqual parked up in the off chance I feel like joining an 0.0 industry corp, but apart from that, I'm never wealthy.

I'm too lazy to sit and whore missions unless I need the standing, as long as I've got enough for the occasional splurge I'm happy Cool

I currently do not mine regularly, I did when first starting the game.

My original reason was to see how far in mining I could go. And for awhile, that included Null; I've seen Mercoxit clouds. Smile

Later, when time became a constraint (and my frantic** 1-2 hour high-sec sessions were no longer possible), I've mined purely for the benefit of others - corp or alliance. I still do this today, if mining as part of corp (pure donation, no payment).

One of the advantages touted here in group mining is the opportunity to have a captive audience (fleet chat). That should not be discounted; Some of the best advice (and interesting PvE/PvP fittings) I've gained over my time here was over the mining fleet chat and/or voice comms. I try to return the favor here as well, when possible.

** Its always baffled me why people find mining relaxing. It never has been for me, but I can get a bit OCD over never having an idle laser. This has gotten worse with the ability to field T2 crystals. Lol And no I don't do Ice personally - if you find my other recent posts I've actually been touting the complete replacement of Ice products as PI.

To be bluntly honest, I'm new and I honestly don't know where or what I want to do. I joined the buddy program and got a nice amount of isk. One of the people who also joined chatted me up ingame and said he was broke from buying ships and fits, could I loan him 5 mil so he could get in a Retriever to make isk.

I'm reading a lot of posts and forums about people who burnout from playing Eve as a noob, A lot went straight into a player corp and became a slave grinding rocks or something that they weren't happy doing, somewhat like starting a new job and being told here is a mop and bucket, go clean the shitter. Hell I would say screw this too! I can see both sides of the coin. Noobs have to work their way up the ladder, not to mention they may be thieves or spies Shocked

I mine for three reasons.

1. I can watch chat and get the hang of the lingo, picking up tidbits of knowledge as I grind that big ass veldspar.

2. As I'm mining, my sp is steadily climbing as is my isk. I would rather be out making some isk then either sitting in station watching my ship spin or looking in the mirror in the CQ saying Damn, I'm sexy! I mix it up, I mine for a while and do missions. I notice that I learn more by mining and listening and asking question then I do jumping into rooms and fighting.

3. I can read forums or google something somebody said or read links that someone told me to read. I read the C&P forum here so I can get an idea of what's the latest scam or am I gonna be alpha-striked as a miner in Gallente space because Goons are killing ice miners or anyone in a ORE class ship. Pirate

I don't see mining as boring or a waste of time. especially when your sitting there mining and right off your bow a ship uncloaks less then 500m, yea that was a holy **** moment, He then informed me of D-Scan is your friend, said o7 fly safe, cloaked and I think he left. Straight

I see a lot of people saying mining sucks and I need to do Lv 4 missions, I ask can a 1.4 mil sp (mostly industry) do that? Hahaha hell no, you need to train XYZ to lvl 4 or 5. I go back to mining and watching my sp and wallet slowly climb.

GROW BRAINS..(no don't that might be even worse).

If nobody mined.....NO SHIPS....NO GAME.

Why should it be entertaining ?? Is ANY aspect of ANY heavy industry 'fun'? NO !

Who says everything has to be pew-pew either ??

Sometimes I wonder if people really understandhow all the pieces of this game fit together.

I really don't think they do, and your question, OP, only exposes your ignorance of MANY things.

That's pretty amusing, though if it was myself I would have ganked. I prefer the Orca + Brutix drop myself. There is no escape from that for the vast majority of Hulk fits as it is quite the surprise much of the time.

Minus 10 points to Hufflepuff. You didn't read the thread, this is not a miner bashing thread.

EDIT: Without miners I would not have had ships to suicide gank with and suicide gank targets, they were integral to the last few weeks of my stay in EVE.

I know it's not a bashing thread. It's just an idiotic question.
