I think he understood your idea just fine. If you actually read his reply, you'll see that.

As somebody commented above...while this would be quite cool in a way, it would be of very limited value when you're actually trying to kill the ship in question.

I much prefer the idea of the brighter/longer engine trails. That would actually be helpful in giving a visual clue to augment the data you're seeing from a well set up overview.
