When a majority decides that taunting or abusing a fanatic is acceptable, you end up with this situation.

Curbing this toxic trend is an individual responsibility, so I urge you to lean on individuals you see propagating this tiresome bear-baiting. There's taking a stand against repellent rhetoric, and then there's just abusing someone who clearly cannot act on their now-defunct belief system because it is easier than participating in meaningful discussion on other topics.
