looking for advice on missiles

I understand guns fairly well but missiles kind of elude me as what is better. For example if you are using missiles lets say light missiles i struggle knowing whether to go for fury, navy or precision. Is precision even useful seems navy would hit any target just fine and if there is loss in dmg it would not equal that of the precision.

Guns on the other hand seem much easier for me to grasp. pick ammo that will keep you in best range opt+falloff or opt for lazors then try and keep angular velocity down with piloting.

Missiles since they will hit as long as you are in range it comes down to picking which one will do most dmg based on expl radius and speed which are things that you can't put on your overview. For example you know if a ship gets past a certain angular velocity or rads your guns just wont track but with missiles even though expl vel is like 236 just cause a ship is goin 3km/s doesn't mean your missile doesn't hit it's just reduced dmg.

As i seem to be struggling I was hoping a missile expert would maybe give me some advice and perhaps thought process that they undertake when trying to decide which ammo to select (not which dmg but as far as fury, navy, precision)

Also will heavy precision hit frigs as hard as say light missile fury's? Also I don't want a formula I found that and that doesn't really help in the middle of a fight.

thx for any help and for keeping "you suck noob" and "just stick to guns" comments to a minimum.

Precision hits small stuff better
Faction is balanced
Fury hits big stuff better

Its not very complicated.

Also to add:

precision hits FASTER stuff better
fury hits SLOWER stuff better

regular/faction are balanced.

so sometimes fury might do more damage to something small if it's not going very fast compared to regular ammo or something.

Like everything in eve: it depends.

There are also some range differences between the different missiles with base skills and a hookbill light precision gets 9.8k fury 14.8k and caldari navy 19.7k, although with all skills at 4 you should be able to hit anything in disruptor range with all 3

Here is the rule of thumb how to use missiles for PVP:

  1. If you are unsure what you will face, take always Faction Missiles. Best alround solution.
  2. If you expect to fight small stuff (smaller than you) at "short" range then go for Precision Missiles.
  3. If you expect to fight larger stuff (larger than you) then go for Fury Missiles.

Essentially there are 2 versions of each missile for long range and short range in all 3 weapon sizes.

Small Short: Rockets
Small Long: Light Missiles
Medium Short: Heavy Assault Missiles (HAMs)
Medium Long: Heavy Missiles (HMLs)
Large Short: Torpedoes
Large Long: Cruise Missiles

So just like you'd pick blasters if you wanted to go short range or railguns if you wanted to go long range, missiles have that option.

If you don't use T2, then simply use faction ammo as it's the best all around. If you do use T2 launchers you have the option to use T2 missiles just like with turrets and T2 ammo.

Now, when it comes to ammo it's further broken down into long and short once again, but it's a bit more complicated. The long range missile moves faster and is better for hitting smaller targets, whereas the short range missile tends to be slower and better for larger targets.

For Short range missiles, "Rage" is short range, big targets, slow moving and "Javelin" is long range, small targets, fast moving.
For Long range missiles, "Fury" is short range, big targets, slow moving, and "Precision" is long range, small targets, fast moving.

Right for short range missiles/rockets.

Wrong for long range missiles though. Precision is shorter range, smaller/faster target.

They changed it a while back didn't they?

That is the Way, the Tao.

Balance is everything.
