may I advise a learning method?:

try one of (actually it might be best to try it all starting form c) -> a), but other way might work
- a) 1. grab attack battlecruiser, put biggest guns you can find on it [tornado with artillerty or naga with rails for best effect] (with skills on 1 ideally) and fly into lvl 3 mission [short ranged rats for best effect]
-> 2. come back to forum and whine about heavy guns sucking
- b) 1. grab gila, put heavies on it (ideally with skills 1) and fly into lvl 3 mission
-> 2. come back to forum and whine about drones and gila sucking
- c) 1. slam your face in the wall several times
-> come back to forum and whine that it hurts
when done (doing all 3 will produce best result):
-> think about what caused pain (I assure you, all three will hurt)
-> if you are not sure, repeat (ideally c))

-> eventually you will realize you did something wrong (c method is best for quick realization)
-> now think what went wrong
-> if not sure, repeat (ideally c))
-> now try thinking about what went wrong
-> as before, if not sure, repeat a) -> c)
...

Not quite true. Before the AI patch I used heavies on my pure DPS Gila Alt. It was a blast.
Having fitted a drone nav comp II made a big difference.
