Admiration for CCP Seagull

Note1: This is not a topic about how game lore and mechanics are or should be.
Note2: English is not my native language.

First I'd like to state that although I use to judge people by what they do, I also only truly feel like I know someone (trust) when I see and hear them speaking. This is a sense of mine that never failed and therefore counts a lot in my final judgement of others statements.

Considering this, I must say how I was impressed by the way CCP Seagull talked in the Fanfest EVE Online Keynote (2013). She seemed somewhat nervous (or excited) but at the same time with a deep serenity in her voice and expressions. What that means to me? Well, please, bare with me a little more.

First, I love the EVE Universe: carebears, nullbears, whateverbears, gankers, griefers, bumpers, scammers, etc. I believe this game is so successful only because it is, indeed, so real: you can be bad, sure, but you can also be good. And, for me, that is the very reason that makes real life and game life so infinitely wonderful: find out why there are people out there being good when there is so much agression, opression, harsh environments, selfishness, and all the "bad things". Well, actually, I also don't consider them "bad things". Why? Because it is only there, under these circumstances and environments, that humanity enlight (in and out of games).

Question: Whatever! What your thoughts and CCP Seagull's have in common?

Answer: They share the vision of a world where you can create AND destroy.

It seems to me she do know the importance of good and bad, yin and yang. This is very important for the balance of things in games and real life. A lot of EVE players think that the game should be as harsh as possible or as carebear(ish) as possible, and there are devs who clearly support one thing more than other. CCP Seagull possibly have her personal preference too but, again, she seems to understand the importance of the creation/destruction duality more than others. The Instigators/Enablers system is about a lot of this. (in my mind, of course)

So far I have seen a lot of CCP's staff videos talking about new (Soonᵗᵐ) features and why they are so exciting, but only CCP Seagull invited us to close our eyes and "imagine" something new. This is also very important because there is no certainty in anything that will be developed, but there is a promise, a hope, a cause that we can follow in the comming expansions. She didn't spend time talking about how "awesome" things will be, instead she seeded our minds with passion for the unknown, something that CCP has been failing to do, or not even trying to, for some time now...

Question: And what the "trust" thing have to do with it?

Answer: Well, it has a lot to do with it.

Again, we can't be certain if CCP will really develop some part of this new [misterious] universe CCP Seagull is promising us, but I do passionately believe that *she* is going to do all she can to make it come reality. Because she feels it, she wants this deep in her soul. It doesn't seemed to me she was reading a script to get us all excited, instead she was openheartedly talking about things that are very clear in her mind, things that touch our dreams and will make us not only play the game, but live its universe. And this is also her dreams universe.

I'd like to say much more, but most of this is pure emotion that I just wanted to share with you fellow capsuleers.

CCP, congratulations for having someone like CCP Seagull. We should all admire people who work with this level of passion! Big smile

Clearly giving a damn goes a lot further than seeming confident or whatnot (though she seemed to find her stride eventually). Thumbs up.

You could see she was a little nervous at first, not just at fanfest but in one of the interview segments they did over the last month (eve development I think). But after a minute or two of speaking, all that vanished and her truly creative and passionate thoughts came through loud and clear. I can see why she was picked to take over from Unifex, and are eager to see and hear more from her on the future of eve Cool

I also like her. She's not very good in public presentation, allways need a bit of time to "warm up". You can see the nervousness when she starts to speak. But she makes that up with competence.

I think she does a really good job and leads the game into the right direction.

Agree, CCP Seagull is awesome for the big picture view she brings to CCP.

She has even managed to tame CCP Soundwave (she must have magical powers), even he was proclaiming to be tolerant of non-PvP playstyles.

The eve should have a bad and good side.

For now there is only the bad one, and a little bit of good.
Maybe there's also shoud be some good game styles for casual players, so there will be less fat no-lifers.

I'm also looking forward to this mainly because it's about the people who playing the game... If it's too harsh, dark, evil, then it'll attracts the certain type of people, while other people will just quit.
For now i have many negative impressions while interacting with the community. The good ones is mostly with high-sec people not from my corp :) It's not about ISK loss or gain, just the people. Because i can successfuly fly in the fleet with good FC, which are good in this game but who i dislike as a persons and just keep silent most of the time.
So if there will be something big that attracts the right type of people, less sociopaths and more sci-fi fans and RL-successful, positive people, it'll be MUCH better game for me.

Also the theme of the odyssey is amazing, and the future plans for it. The new trailer makes me remember why i've sterted to play this game in the first place and what i thought this game is about.

So i'm very glad we have CCP Seagull to direct this game. This game needs a new approach loooooooooong ago.

in 2007 i've thought it's a sci-fi simulator, not an "e-sports" game. I'm not a teenager, how would i like it much?

I don't think EVE have mostly bad sides, there are a lot of good ones too. I'm sure there are people who feel very frustrated when they are gate camped, but I'm also sure that people who gate camp have a wonderful time doing it. So the real bad thing about this event is that the camper and the camped didn't share the same interests, and thats all. In many cases the camped ones also enjoy the thrill of escaping (or even fighting back) the campers, and this is also "working as intended" as some might say. There are many other examples, but I believe this one is very generic and easy to understand.

I do agree that EVE should have more casual (solo) content. Many players criticize who like this saying that "you are failing at playing a MMO: a game that at its very concept should be played with others", but I believe that many, including me, also play EVE because of its universe and not because of its PvP/PvE group mechanics specifically. I do enjoy a good PvP, and have a lot of fun with PvE sometimes, but I also like to wander about life and the universe when mining or warping/jumping through systems as there is no way I can do this in real life, and I love science and science fiction.

I think she is doing a very good job. And, btw, she isn' the best presenter (nor am I, when speaking in front of hundreds of people). But she hasn't been hired to do a speech once in a year, but to deliver in terms of EveOnline's development in general. And there she seems do be doing an excellent job (me thinks, I am not working there, after all...).

CCP Seagull has a skill, a "gift" if you will, for making the listener feel they are part of the conversation or presentation.

People will rarely listen to you, or hear what you say, if that ability is lacking.

An excellent presentation.

Hear hear! I enjoyed her presentation a great deal. If this is what the future of EvE brings, it's a pretty bright future indeed.

Just to add to this, most people in Eve are decent people.
But like everything in life, the negative is what is mostly remembered and talked about, thus amplified (plus the 'bad' people like having the loudest voices)
