Religious beliefs have no place in a science class, you don't see science being taught in religious education classes (can you imagine the amount of tears you would get from the various religions if it was?)

I still count Pluto as a planet, as far as I'm concerned our solar system has 9 planets not 8. The solar system may well have more, every time NASA say that their probes are about to leave it, they find out that they haven't and that it's bigger than they previously thought.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

That test is pretty alarming. By the 4th grade, kids shouldn't need a picture of a behemoth to circle. They ought to be able to actually write the word out, and not be circling pictures like a 2nd grader.

We found many, many planetoids bigger than Pluto beyond the orbit of Neptune, Sedna and Eris for example. So either we have those 11+ to 100+ planets or we redefine planets.

Besides, its a Mass Relay...

imo opinion, many stars out there, perhaps even most, have tons of leftover junk floating around in the outskirts of their gravitational range. just how it works, i think.

If Pluto were dragged within the orbit of Jupiter, it would begin falling apart and evaporating like a comet, eventually vanishing.

It may be a planet-sized object, but it's not really a viable planet.

We just need a new word for these loosely formed large objects.

There's no room to be conservative when it comes to science. There's always more data to find.

Yeah, a 4th grader probably does not know "behemoth" or anything about specifically Job 40.

I agree with the sentiment of generalized stupidity and anti-science being the New Big Thing in American education, but that is a fake 'test'.

Hang on, this dumbing down/religious fundamentalism is a trend? I thought it was a minority crackpot thing in the bible belt?

Once initiated, especially if religious concerns are involved, it's hard to snuff something out and it tends to grow. (See middle eastern terrorism spreading to Rusiaa, etc).

Edit: yes, I thought it was just a limited thing a few years ago, but this is becoming rather major most indeed. Neil DeGrasse Tyson talks a lot about it. I believe this crap is even required teaching in Louisiana and Mississippi. My father was a deacon in the Baptist Church and my grandfather was the founder f the American Baptist Association Seminary in Little Rock, Arkansas, but I know for sure both would disapprove of this. It's a whole new ballgame.

2nd Edit: But then Mississippi is also the state where I could be legally kicked out of my apartment if they even suspected I was gay. I'm also legally a criminal in Alabama because of that. America is not really the Land of the Free at all.

Whilst I'll agree this is disturbing, I'm going to make a point that I've made before, and been proven resoundingly correct:

"In this country, when you have to define and defend a position by this kind of indoctrination or explicit push-back, the tipping-point has already passed, and the defenders have lost."

What you are seeing now is the desperate defensive reaction of an outlook and mindset that has already been superseded and is repidly sliding on its way towards the dumpster of history. I first made that assertion more than 15 years ago in regards to Gay Rights, and again 12 years ago in regards to Gay Marriage, and about 6 years ago in regards to Gays in the Service. In each case, I've been flat-out correct. There have been (and will continue to be for some while) rear-guard (heh!) actions and counter-attacks, and blunders by rights activists, but in each and every case the trend and agenda has moved forward inevitibly once society has pushed far enough that lines must be drawn as publicly-stated political choices. It's not entirely done yet, but the fat lady is warming up, and everyone knows it.

This is another such case. The zealots are digging in because they know they're surrounded, outnumbered, and that there are no re-enforcements coming. You can argue, you can point out cases and say I'm wrong (the zealots desperately pray that I am), but I've already pulled a hat trick, and I'm pretty damn sure I'm headed for a four-bagger. This one will take a bit longer, I anticipate, and it won't be without some setbacks, but the tipping point is past and we're on the down-hill run.

Edit:
Did I mention that I'm a Republican and a conservative*? Lol

*True conservative - as in "get governent the hell out of our bedrooms, our marriages, and out of every other place we can chase them." Small government is good. Government that can regulate who gets to screw or marry whom is not small. It's big and intrusive.

Interesting the only group doing this in Europe (that I am aware) is virtually unopposed. Islam gets a free pass due to multiculturalism.... but even thats starting to have its core scream like those that feel that have everything to lose.

how did Thunderfoot put it, The internet is where ideologies come to die...

Well, I only have evidence to support my observation in the US, which is a fairly distinct socio-political environment. It might apply elsewhere, but I dunno.

Do like the thunderfoot comment, though.

That's libertarianism, is it not?

I wouldn't call them surrounded or outnumbered, when 80% of Americans call themselves religious.

The only difference between American Liberals and Conservatives is that the Liberals steal your money and give it to the lazy and the Conservatives steal your money to start wars of morality.

Ha. Ha. Ha.

'Wars of morality' aren't conservative either - they're religious, and that's no truly conservative. Indeed, you can find true conservatives in the Democratic party too - they're just mostly in hiding.

Conservatism means changing slowly, step-wise, and only after due consideration. It means paying for the minimum government necessary, and leaving people to get on with business as best they can, consistent with the minimum harm to the most people. It's not Libertarianism, 'cause government is necessary in some functions and roles, and people are not naturally altruistic or wise.
