Hello,

I started a few days ago. After completing the tutorials and reading some guides and watching Youtube videos, I finally know what I want to do in EvE. - Thanks for all the great help I've received ingame!

I want to become a Miner and I want to do research and production once I have a good graps of how everything works and have my mining skills maxed out.

What I'm planning to do is create a second character for the only purpose of getting research and production skills ready. That way I would already have a character with the skills to move on to research and production once I am skilled in mining and have the necessary budget.
I would then just send all the ore's required for production from my mining guy to my production guy.

Is this a good idea or would you rather get one character to have all the skills required for mining, research and production? Why I'm asking is because I don't know if I can produce good quality without great resource loss without doing missions to get a good standing? The production guy would be for production/research only, no missions would be completed with him.

Thank you,

No missions = no good standings = higher refine tax + higher sell taxes...
So you likely will not be able to compete with the real industrial big shots.

For anything other than casual manufacturing, a single miner won't be able to produce all the minerals required unless they're mining full time, not to mention the lowsec and nullsec minerals.

You need standings for perfect ore refining, or the NPC corp takes up to 5% of the minerals
You need standing to reduce the cost of the NPC station manufacturing lines
You need standings (faction and corp) to reduce the broker fees at whichever trade hub you put up your mineral buy orders and product sell orders.

You can pay for standing (pay other people to fleet with you, they run missions and share standings) if you really don't want to run missions.

Personally, one character. It doesn't take that long to get a good mining character, perfect will take few months more but not forever.

Alright, got it.

What about following idea:

Mining and Exploring as my two main paths on one character?

I might not understand how EvE works yet, but that combo seems reasonable to me. Why?:
I can max out mining to get a consistent income and I can satisfy my "explorer soul" at the same time I have chances of finding some WH to mine in or to find some stuff to analyze or salvage.

OR

Mining/PI.

In a few months I'll probably read this post and what I asked and just shake my head. :)

Do more of what you find fun. This is a little bit of direction for you.

From the sounds of it, you want to become a wormhole prospector, mining the high-end sites found there.

You'll start as a 'cockroach' in a Venture.

Learn to fly a Venture, and use Miner-2s. Skill up some astrometrics and your favorite racial frigate, because the scanning frigates get bonuses to scanning. Afford a set of Sisters Probes. Learn to use a tech one prototype cloaking as well.

Scan out a wormhole. Duck your head in - you're either dead or you arent. If you arent, bookmark the exit, warp to a planet, kick out probes, cloak up and begin scanning. You're looking for a 'grav site', full of big rocks, including the high-end ores of Arkanor, Bistot and Crokite.

While you're there, do a google search for your wormhole, and look at www.eve-kill.net to see how many kills have happened there recently.

Once you find it, bookmark it, and go back to the exit, which you bookmarked, and go get your Venture.

Then get 5000 m3 of high end ores and GTFO. If anything appears on dscan, GTFO. If sleepers appear, GTFO. You're a cockroach - activity makes you GTFO.

Eventually, you might think about graduating to be a squatter, where you can have your own little station where you can keep spare ships, but you'll probably want to be flying a proper combat/hacking/archaelogy/hacking ship, as well as an industrial transport and maybe even a mining barge.

Hope this helps :)

Oh, and there are some newbie friendly corps. Some of them even explore heavily and use heavily-tanked mining ships as bait for raiders ;)

You hit the nail on the head. That is exactly what I would like doing.

Thank you very much!
