Alt char question?

This is hopefully a quick and easy question for guys with alts.

I'm currently playing a single char, running L4's and making some easy isk. I've got some valuable stuff (to me anyway), and can easily now afford to plex a 2nd char.

What I really want to get into is some pvp lulz. I'm a complete noob at pvp so I fully expect to be turned into space dust many many times, so was thinking of making my new char just focus on pvp and let my main do the isk hording to fund it.

The question is, my main is already fairly decent with pew pew skills (EWAR is rubbish but I can fix that quickly), so would I be better using that for pvp and train my new char to make the iskies? I'm concerned that training a new pvp char will take a long time, but then so will another isk making char. The thought of losing my implants on my main makes me cry a little (never been podded ever haha, i'm pretty careful when scouting about in and around low sec, usually exploration), but also I'm frankly getting bored of the safety. Plus killing other peeps sounds like lots of fun :D

TL;DR - what did you use your very first char for? Isk making, PVP, or something else entirely?

Take this with a grain of salt, as I only had an alt for a couple of months, and have very little PvP experience, but I would think it would be more practical to train up a new PvP character. Pure PvP characters pretty much only need combat skills, and it's feasible to specialize in small hulls/weapon systems to train them up to high levels in a relatively short time. Other things go into PvE characters, like corporate/faction standings and social/trade skills, and you need larger ships for efficient moneymaking, meaning more prerequisites and longer training times. It sounds like you've already put a lot of that effort into your main.

My standard recommendation is:

Train the next character differently. Guns vs Missiles, Shield vs Armour, etc.
This will give you more options for game play in general.
Mission skills and Combat skills are basically the same, so each character can do both. Be careful with your standings is all. You don't want to be enemies with some faction with a pure PvP character.
If you like PvP, at some point you will probably use both characters.

Make a PvP clone with smaller implants.

My main is combat and my alt is industry. I cruise around null with my main and build stuff with my alt. When cash starts getting low, I go run a few L4s with my main and vacuum up the loot and salvage with my alt in a Noctis. Repeat as needed.

So far, this has worked well for me and keeps things interesting. It also gives me plenty of different things to try out.

If I was in your position, I would train the alt for PVP and keep your current char for isk making, which provides you with a decent source of income to cover the initial losses - always make sure to have an isk source, otherwise you are risking becoming too risk averse which often results in you having less fun.

However, if you prefer to have a certain level of sp before taking the char into PVP, train some basic Noctis skills and dual box to increase your isk/hr potentiale until the PVP char is ready.

Regarding the PVP bit, I'd suggest looking up RvB for starters. This will provide you with kills and experience which will allow for you to be more selective, should you choose to go to 0.0 etc.

If you're making isk through combat, than there is no reason why it can't be your pvp character too, unless you want to run incursions while you're at war with another corp or something like that.

Also, getting podded sucks, but with experience there's no reason to loose pods anywhere outside of nullsec bubbles. Just align and spam warp while your ship is in structure and you should fly like an eagle. Also, podding gives a painful sec hit so there will be pilots who don't bother with it.

And, getting an implant free jump clone for pvp is a good plan even it can take a bit of grinding for if your corp doesn't have the standings for them.

This character has always just been combat focused, but My alt started as a miner, but I didn't do much of it so I went hauler/salvager the help with lvl4s which was my isk stream at the time, then added probing skills for scouting/exploration, then trade skills which is now my main source of ISK. I'm training up for logi V so I can run incursions while my main is incapable or hiding in a station.

Nothing wrong with a seperate PVP alt, but it might be disheartening training the same skills twice at the same time. For me the alt was all about being able stuff I couldn't do with 1 character.
