This is mainly because of the settlements in nominal Palestinian territory. I've heard stories first hand that were it not for the US supporting Israel would result in heavy UN sanctions. Even Israel doesn't take the US seriously when it asks for peace treaties and stopping building the settlements. This is a core issue in the Mid East, and has to be dealt with if we can realistically hope to work towards peace.
Have you ever lived in the Middle East? Me 2 1/2 years in Saudi and 3 years in Egypt... none of my Arab friends or acquaintance gave a &*!@ about settlements.

The core issue between Arabs/Muslims and Israelis/Jews is older and more complex.

Too true. As someone living in the region, lets leave it be for other things. No sense arguing over it here which is utterly pointless.

Lets focus on the events in Boston and its surroundings now.

Seems like things are coming a head.

News is saying 1 suspect killed in a shoot out the other on the run.

Which they won't.
Impasse.

Oh no. It goes back much, much further than that. The settlements issue is a symptom and an excuse, not a cause.

Fair enough and well said.

The shooting involved an MIT cop, who was unfortunately killed. Two suspects were believed to be involved: one is in custody, the second is considered heavily-armed and dangerous. Explosives were reportedly used in their chase with police, with one of the suspects crying, "Fire in the hole!" before the first detonation.

Massachusetts State Police, Massachusetts National Guard (infantry and military police companies), FBI, and ATF forces are all involved in the manhunt. These suspects are not believed to be the suspects sought in the Boston Marathon bombing on Monday.

Not entirely surprised. One bad thing happens, the whackos and wannabees come bursting out of the woodwork. This is, however, a bit more whacko than usual.

CNN's reporting on this is confused, but they're now stating that the suspects involved in the death of the MIT officer ARE believed to be the bombing suspects. One suspect is reported as dead, the other on the run.

News here is saying there is a far left / radical aspect.

Not sure how accurate that is, but apparently there are "names" floating around for the photos, one of which is a far left wing activist supposedly.

Honestly, the biggest headache in current media and modern super connected society means crap like this starts flying. Stories, left right and centre with very little credibility, picked up and reported as fact.

I feel sorry for the Boston PD spokesperson / FBI spokesperson who have to deal with the press.

And the ugly face of knee jerk / high demand journalism rears its head yet again.

Shame really. There really should be a gag order until a full investigation can be revealed. A free press is great, but being reckless in reporting that could turn violent is stupid. Same thing with suspected sex offenders, innocent til proven guilty doesnt seem to meet much anymore if theres a good scoop in it.

Its interesting, im reading a variety of online sources and some are saying the two involved "are" and "are not" involved. Not sure about the time delay between these stories though or if they have been updated.

Edit

Rumours of the two being Chechens or from Dagestan now. No idea on the validity of these claims though.

I like the UK model - but that also gimps the ability to use the media as a social tool in aid of law enforcement. There's a balance to be struck somewhere, I'm sure.

CNN's reporting is particularly confused, making both claims in the same article. Clearly an 'update' fiasco. CBS is saying '"Involved".

Care to support that claim?

Hmm. Seems NBC said the suspects have received military training but no source on where / why. So im taking that with a grain of salt.

Though the WHDH live feed is good as its local people talking on real events than trying to look at a "bigger picture" which right now is just the talking heads talking about nothing so it seems.

USA Today and Associated Press are reporting that the suspects are indeed Russian, the "white hat" guy is identified as Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19 yrs old.

edit: apparently the two are brothers.

Yeah WHDH just reported that.

You know this doesnt make sense to me.

You have 2 men, they set off bombs. Then they go and rob a store last night and brag about the bombings supposedly openly?

Sorry, but living in the middle east, you learn a fair bit around the motives / tactics of terrorism and this doesnt fit the mould. Even if they are two idiots warped by ideology... this doesnt fit my experience with these kinds of people. They tend to bomb, and get the hell out of town or seek martyrdom as bloodily as possible.

Something doesnt smell right if you ask me. Granted I wasnt in counter terror or intelligence, I was in the armour but we still had to sit through the basic class and this is just... weird.

Agreed. This smells all wrong.

I guess. But they seem to have turned awfully suicidal. Why set off remote bombs or bombs on a timer, then do dumbass stuff they did last night? You're probably right. If the ages are correct, they're two boys whose heads have been filled with glory and other crap like that and believe their own immortality.

Just different to the style I'm used to facing here.

Now being reported theres a lot of police surrounding an apartment building.

As speculated by my mother: They may not have been prepared for the level of observation - the sheer numbers of cameras. It's possible they had no end-game plan, thought they'd just sit out the investigations anonymously, and have now panicked when they realized that they were found out so quickly.

Yeah but psychology is important in these kinds of situation. Granted, being totally loopey could well be plausable. Just in my experience they tend to be highly rational. Then again they could be brainwashed morons.

The postmortem intelligence gathering from their hard drives will reveal a window on that.

I do hope they catch the other one alive though. My money though is on these two being lone wolves. I doubt they're linked to Chechnya or the groups there.

But none of us here are in possession of the facts, so who knows.

I just realised being a civilian sucks... I miss my military connections when stuff like this happened here... the disconnect is disturbing.

That does sound likely if they are acting independently with no help from outside sources. They wont have planned ahead and are panicked. They probably thought they were geniuses, and thought that the USA was a soft target like a lot of these groups think.... right until your door is kicked in and they realise how fast everything can change.
