Well, you are 2 year old character, you should be quite nicely skilled and even specialized in one race so I don't see any harm in cross-training into other races.

Your corpies/friends/people probably meant that it is not good to try skill at all races at once because your will spread your skills too thin to be really efficient in any of them. But again, after 2 years of being Minnie you have a right to try something new.

I was exclusively minnie pilot for a year and then I realized that I am missing skills to fly pretty awesome ships just because I put some imaginary restrictions on myself. First cross-train was into Tengu which still makes my slave chains jingle every time I think about it. But hey, at least I can also fly in new cyclone with t2 launchers so no real harm done.

After all do what you want, it is your gametime and your money.

It is only a bad idea to cross-train when your core skills are underdeveloped.

These are the only differences between the races:
* Ship skills.
* Offensive (weapon system) skills.
* Defensive (tanking) skills.

If you have been a Minmatar pilot for a while, chances are you have both armor and shield tanking skills already, as well as projectile and turret support skills. You may already have some drone skills too.

For Gallente ships, chances are you only need to train: Gallente ships, hybrid weapons, and possibly drones (but not all Gallente ships are drone-boats).

It took me about 2 months to train for 3 races and all their T1 turrets and T1 ships (as a Caldari pilot, I didn't have any turret support skills, so I also had to train those).

what they mean is that you might spend too long training ship skills for other races when your support skills are underdeveloped

If you can fit t2 armour and shield tank and have your desired weapon system trained up properly I see no reason why you shouldn't train another race.

What I see is:
Your biggest skill set is all about Minmatar Industrial stuff.
Other than that, you are not seriously commited to any race just yet.

So:
Pick a race or ship class that you like and go for it.

Be aware, that your friends were probably trying to give you good advice, based on what they have experience with.
