I tried it briefly. The idea is great, but the implementation definitely needs more work. The gaps are so huge initially, that for a moment I thought you only had the first 2 events ready. On the other hand if you scale back the timeline, most events become overlapped in to a large blob of unorganized and unclickable mess. To go from a view, that shows the timeline clearly to a view where individual grouped events become clear takes a lot of clicking on the zoom buttons. It shouldn't take this much effort to use a simple timeline.

You really need to rethink how to more conveniently switch between closeup view and a timeline view. Consider having a constantly visible overview of the timeline at the bottom of the screen and have it be clickable. Hovering over it should show a zoomed view of that portion of the timeline and clicking on it should lock the view to that point and return to show it when the mouse cursor no longer hovers over the timeline.

It is an addition to the current timeline and it should always shows the entire timeline in a single screen. That way the user can constantly see where in the timeline the zoomed view is situated. It keeps the current large zoomed view in the middle of the screen, but gives the user the ability to quickly navigate and switch between the different view modes without losing our perspective where it all fits in the big picture. Easy for the user to navigate and understand and gets rid of the clickfests with the zoom buttons.

Assign timebar estate according to the density of events rather than lineal time. That, or use some logarythm-esque timebar that starts with 1000 pixels:10.000 years, then make it 1000:1000, 1000:100, 1000:10, 1000:1...

Ok, I'm confused, earlier today I had access to the timeline site, and now suddenly I'm receiving error messages when I try to go back to it.

What you guys really need to do is to take all the stuff that made EvE what it is today and that means stuff that has been created by the community - wars, competitions, player run alliances and corporations, huge battles, small but important battles, scams, tales of treachery, tales of friendship, epic market manipulations, famous pirates, famous entrepreneurs etc - and to intervene it with your storyline.

Nobody really cares about some generic made up Emperor. What we really want to see is how WE influenced EvE universe world over the years.

This is really great! Thank you.
Some initial comments.. I think you need to be able to zoom in a lot more to be able to see more hidden, smaller events that would otherwise be drowned out by the major ones.

Also, while huge player events that affect much of the universe need to be on there, it would be nice to somehow integrate it to tell smaller personal stories and accomplishments. Something like the ability for a corp to add it's own timeline along with EVE's general timeline and share it with corp members or curious public.

Perhaps drop down menus to link to more in depth pages on smaller events relating to such major events?

Very nice, I have been working on a video history of new Eden, but it looks like this is vastly better than what I was working on.

And yes, one of the most important moments of New Eden history was the moment when BOB was betrayed and disbanded.

I clicked on the link and I got redirected to a site that sells.. XtraSize?! I don't need any 7.5 cm extra body part enlargement , so I tried to click again on the timeline link. This time I landed on eve.com that is a dummy site:

Nice! Love it.

Small nitpick: "AD" comes before the year number, not after, so year dates ought to be written as AD 7987, AD 20544, etc.

Once this is fixed, my internal grammar **** will let me give it five out of five thumbs up.

Errr... how many thumbs do you even have?

Strictly, basing it off Latin grammar, you're absolutely correct. However, both usages of placing the AD before or after the date are in common and accepted use in modern English. The important thing is to be consistent about it.

Here we're being consistent with the usage adopted throughout EVE's background material in the past from the very first timelines, in fiction and through to our evelopedia content.

Sorry we won't be getting that fifth thumb but there it is. Blink

On the time-scale, as Zulu said: it's a priority to address the problem of displaying the very long history of New Eden with continuity and a nice experience.

This is only the beginning.

Bah. Fine. I still say having the AD after the number looks less classy and less sci-fi.

I am deeply dissapointed in the new website.

Specifically, I am profoundly disheartened by the use of the Caldari regional nebula as the backdrop. This is profoundly racist, and does not give credit to the pivotal role of the Amarr Empire in the birth of modern society. I hereby demand that the Domain regional nebula be put in it's place.

That, or something badass like Cauldron or Cloud Ring. Those are some sexy backgrounds there.

The renaming of stations in memory of Vile Rat was something that we'd be remiss to leave out. However that was for real-life reasons and not so game related. I wonder if his game related activities could somehow be adapted for a storyline and then woven into the history of Eve.

Please mix some music behind events in the timeline... the darker the event, the darker the music.

Thx.

Reserved... liking what I see so far though.

Edit:

The timeline needs the ability to zoom in and out so its easier to read the flags for events that happened after the game's launch.
Otherwise the lore timeline is great, but what would be REALLY great is if a second timeline was added, one that showed player content.

Stuff like the rise and fall of coalitions, the Great Wars, milestones in the game's development that the players caused. If the game is about player driven and emergent game play, a timeline that shows things like the fall of major coalitions(BoB, -A-, Red Alliance when they were relevant) and the Great Wars, as well as major CCP buffs and nerfs (like the Nano-nerf).

Definitely an awesome tool, great work Big smile

Just a thought about the whole scale thing. Rather that have a fixed scale, how about having it zoom in when you get to around 100 YC point. If you're going to have lore, player stories ect etc its going to get super crowded.

i just read all through it and I support the following ideas:

1) eliminate the fixed scale,, too much space between the first several entries
2) i like the condensed summary for each individual event, but you need to link to the chronical or wiki page that expands on the details. This might even be a place to point the reader to amazon or whatever sales portal that you want for the official eve novels
3)
add a filter via a dropdown of preselected themes, or even key word searches that limit the timeline to only those events that interest the reader. It would be cool to enter "Caldari" and only see those events that involve the Caldari as a prime subject of the event.

As to continue idea of links - it would be wonderful to see also (in addition to chronicles and wiki) links on a patch trailers i think.
edit: oh, done...
And +1 to filtering events (customizable filters approved).
