Ideas for alts?

I just recently found out you could train an alt on a second acct and then later transfer it to the same acct as your main character. This makes me want to start an alt but I am unsure as to what this characters focus should be. My main character will be primarily focused on PvP ( T1 frigs & cruisers ) with just a splash of exploration skills to make ISK until I can do L4 missions.

I'm pretty sure I want this alt to be able to pilot a hauler ( in case I run into problems later with sec status ) but I'm unsure what else to train to make it helpful to my main. Here's my ideas so far......

Datacore farming- This seems feasible although a bit of a grind and expensive to get started. But eventually really low maintenance and unlikely to take a lot of time away from PvP.

Trading- Really not sure about this. Me and math never got along well and I'm just not sure I'd be that successful at it.

Manufacturing- There doesn't seem to be much point in making T1 stuff unless you also mine because from what I've seen, T1 items sell for whatever the material is worth (I may be wrong about this). T2 items seem to take more dedication than I'm willing to commit to.

Research- I don't ever plan on owning a POS so not sure I should even consider this.

PI- I've done this in hi sec. Need to go to the test server and try it in low sec to see if it's worth my time.

Any other ideas?

Most of the time if you don't know what you need an alt for means that you don't need that alt.

If you plan on staying in t1 cruisers and frigates for a while, there's no point in training an alt on a separate account.

A basic bestower pilot takes a couple hours to make, so just pause your main while you train.

If you want go on full on hauler alt training you can look at either freighters (including regular or jump freighters), transport ships (especially the cloaky ones) or orcas.

Other popular alt choices most often include something that will supplement your mains pvp:

- cov ops alt (to help with scouting and probing)
- recon alt (as above plus a bit of ewar and firepower)
- capital alt (including supercarriers and titans)
- leadership alt
- another generic combat pilot
- pilot that focuses on a different race or class of ships (for example a dedicated BS pilot, to complement your cruiser main).
- dedicated FW alts

Non pvp activities mostly include a semi passive income alts:
- research alts
- datacore farmers
- PI farmers
- miners (that you can use when you don't want to focus on eve too much)
- POS reaction alts

But as I've said - if you don't know what you need an alt for, you probably don't need one.

One type of alt not mentioned, which can be very handy - especially i you are planning on doing low sec and/or null sec pvp. It's a cyno alt. Especially if you go cyno 5 for covert cyno and black ops stuff it takes a while.

Also, if you plan to live in low sec and go -5 or "worse" then a money making alt in high sec is very nice to have. Wheather it's running L4s or trading or some other carebear means of bringing in isk is up to you.

I'd suggest waiting until you have a clear need before heading out into "I must have an alt" land.

The alts need attention: you have to set up skill queues, grind standings, buy equipment, etc. Eventually you'll find yourself spending more and more time maintaining your alts and no time actually enjoying the game.

Remember Fight Club — you don't own your alts, your alts own you!

Adding to Zi'Boos list:
- Trading/Jita price checking alt
- Out of corp freighter alt
- Neutral forum trolling alt

At your point, the only good reason to make an alt is standings :

- If you are a pirate, you might want an alt that can fly and trade safely in highsec

- If you are an anti-pirate, having an pirate alt is a good idea to get more frequent pvp action.

The only other reasons to get an alt are if you want to try a different route (trading, mining, caps, ...)

If you want something to combine with your pvp main, i would say a Cov op hands down. Specially if you want to fly bigger boats like BC's and BS's. A cov op will save you a lot of losses by scouting for gate camps. You can use you main as a bait, as ennemies will think they can take you down, while your cloaked ship turns the tide of the battle.

Either way, avoid having the two alts in the same corporation/alliance. You don't want potential targets to understand that both ships work together.

For PvP stricly, if you want your alt to fly a ship that compensates the weaknesses of your main's ship. If your main trains for big battleships (More damage but low velocity and tracking speed), you want a alt that can web/scramble a target for you. So an interdictor or a cov op are the best addition to your pvp need.

FiS should be the priority, but WiS should not be burried!

Don't encourage CCP to make empty promises or Incarna will happen again!

I stink at math , allways have and prob allways will yet find that trading suits me most in this game.It doens't take a scientist to see if you buy something for 100 mille and sell it for 150 that you made a profit there. Also since you say you want to make a pvp char as main then trading is something wich once you got the hang of it does not take much time yet seeds enough isk to pvp your heart out.

We are all born ignorant, but one must work hard to remain stupid.

Thanks for all the replies. Yeah I probably should just wait on the alt thing until I know better what I want. Just kinda sux you can't try new stuff w/o taking time away from your current training. They should make "premium" accounts where you can train two chars at once for an extra $5 a month or something.

CCP could easly change the system so that you could train two toons on the same account. Even after 2 years in the game, you will still have skills to train with your main as there is no level cap in eve. The only way to train an alt without slowing your main down, is creating an second account.

Easy money for CCP... so don't expect that to change.

My advice is to wait and make soe isks. Once you get a few billion isks (achievable one you start doing level 4's), buy a fully trained and ready for action toon in the bazar, and transfer it into your main's account.

Saves you the cost of a second account, and the time training the alt. That's the best thing to do unless you really want to train it yourself.

Yeah I kinda like doing things myself and the cost of a 2nd acct really isn't an issue for me. Part of the benefits of being OLD :)

Whatever you choose make sure that you pick something that compliments your main.

So look at your main and see what he lacks or is weak at. What would make him more efficient etc.
