Hey guys,
We're about to get a 3d printer at work, and I'm wanting a good test print. Something like Dramiel, Oracle, Ashimmu or something like that. I'm wanting to find something that has both fine detail as well as smooth surfaces.

Does anyone know where I can find some ship models, preferably in the following file formats:
STL, VRML, PLY, 3DS, ZPR, FBX

Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks for the info. I gave it a shot and tried following these instructions:
http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Rendering_EVE_Models_101

But none of the .gr2 files seem to want to open. Here is a screenshot of the error:

Any idea what I might be doing wrong?

I exported a lot of ship models a while back, in 2009. I never got around to using them for what I was wanting but they should be useful to you perhaps.

I linked to a bunch in an old thread.

You need to have granny2.dll in TriExporter folder. If you dont have it - search other Triexporter version on http://eve-files.com/ or just google for that dll

Here is a few I have exported and placed up on Thingiverse.

When it comes to exporting the models using Triexporter, you have to understand that the raw models are not printable without doing some post-exporting work. I recommend using Meshlab and Netfabb to close the holes in the exported files and fix any manifold edges and such.

Edit: I noticed you stated you were looking for a smoother model with detail. The smoothest Eve ship I have printed was actually a capsule. I would also recommend trying out the Nyx model I exported. I haven't had a chance to print it myself, but it should work as I have already done the post export work.

Post an image of the results if you get it working, please. I'd love to see how it turns out!

for a start the fenrir or charon or nyx would be easy for a 3d printer

Try just exporting the file to another folder as a 3DS.

Here's a tutorial.

That would be a bad bad idea. Creating a model or other theme inspired art for personal non business use is ok (most of the time, asking permission is ideal), creating a theme inspired model or art for resale is stealing copyrighted material for personal gain.

Hey guys thanks a lot for the help. Sorry for my late replies but we're doing the install today and I'll try to get some of these and I'm going to try to print the Nyx.

Its only because I care, and I'd hate to see young people have to play soap on a rope.
