Has probing changed in the last year?

I just got back from a year long Eve break. Since I joined in 2006, i tend to play several months on, then off, then on etc... In my last corp, i spent 5 months in a wormhole, so i'm confident in my scanning abilities. However, now I feel terrible. For some reason, I can't pinpoint any cosmic sigs beyond 60% or so with 6 (or even 7...) probes out. It get's really annoying when you are down to either .25 or .5 AU, the red dot in your sites and you aren't even 20%.

Right now i'm in a hound with grav rigs using sisters core and combat scanner. I can lock down ships fine, but not cosmic sigs.

Can anyone tell me what's going on?

Check your filter, it sounds as though you may have some signatures unchecked in your scanning filter box.

As said it's probably the filter. Once you get enough hit on something that it shows its name if it's on the filter it just vanishes, but then if you move your probes away from it and it goes back to 20% it will show up again.

It's fuckin stupid. Just turn the filter off.

If its awhile since you last played you might have missed the introduction of shift and alt to move multiple probes also.

Thanks for the help, but the filter should be fine. I've got it set right now to WH's and Ships, that being cosmic sigs : Unknown, All Anomalies, and all ships. The targets show, i just can't pinpoint them. I have:

Astro Acquisition: 3
Pinpointing: 4
Rangefinding : 3
Astrometrics : 4

I should be able to pick these up right?

If your problem isn't filters, and frankly, it is definitely not your skills, then I guess you just need a youtube probing refresher. You shouldn't be having problems.

Turn off the filters and check again, instead of just assuming your filters are right?

With the increase in shiptoasting, the Report timer needs to be shortened.

This.

If you have old filters they are borked.

It was the filters. I guess when it hit a high enough number to determine if it was a site, it would be filtered out which i didn't realize. After the fact though, I do still find some sites that I can't hit 100% on, but it's more rare.

Thanks for the input. Also, the alt adjust is miraculous. I remember wishing it was there a while ago.

Carry on.

The filters issue happened to a corp-mate of mine. Same thing - when the sig res hit above 25% his scanner was ignoring the sig because it had been IDed for type.

Also a great source of entertainment, listening to him swear at the scanner.

Ahhh, Eve. You fuckin' mother of all trolls.

I do find that some corpies totaly hate scanning and refuse to do it and hope this new update may change that. But I do hope they try to keep rewarding the more skillful scanners at the same time making the interface a little more fun.

As one of the guys said on a popular wormhole podcast you have content providers and content users and hopfully the update will make more former ones.

Yeah, Last night I spent a good 2 hours scanning, only to find at the end nobody on, quite pee'ved and wont really know whats happend till Im back on tonight.

I'll happly scan as it means that Im in doing something, improving my scanning speed all the time ( until you find an intresting read on a eve media site ) rather than being logged afk waiting for somebody to find something to do.

I've just spent the last 3 hours trying to pinpoint 2 signatures, what a waste of fkn time.. This scanning system is really something, devs must have got together at some point and said "lets make this scanning/probing business as inaccessible as possible" - It's so unpredictable, sometimes it works pretty much straight away, then other times, nothing... Slowly losing patience with the inaccessibility issues of this game..

Takes me 5 mins to do a system. Used to take me an hour. Nothing wrong with the probing system. It is not supposed to be easy. Making it easier would be stupid...

If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there.

All is ok with scanning, you make it wrong and you probably dont have knowledge/ needed scan probe strength because of skills/rigs etc...

only change I'm aware of is the shift/alt awesome sauce.

I'm a bit rusty on my probing because I haven't been doing it as often lately (damn you Kerbal Space Program and Minecraft!), but I'm pretty sure I could lock down any site with 4 standard core probes and a standard launcher on a non-bonused ship with no grav rigs. might take a little while longer, but eh.
