It's not the WoW players here suggesting careers.

What folks do suggest, is a means to communicate in terms they can understand.

If you got a Marine or a soldier in a room, even though each service has their own culture and lingo, they can communicate to do their job. It's because the language used is there to promote communication.

So if you really want to connect to a new player, it's best to do so via the language they can understand.

Goal is to get players to enjoy a game and stay playing, not kicking them out the door because of sub-culture beliefs.

Consult CCP what is or isn't EvE...

I did, and this is what the wiki says on that page:

In New Eden there are no true career paths.

Most players in my corp have never played WoW or any other MMO.

EVE caters to a different audience.

Deal with it.

I've kept an eye on this thread but refused to reply in it because it has been such a flame fest and troll magnet, however now I'm going to fall for said troll myself but it's necessary to make sure that no one actually picks up on his mistaken ideas.

Preamble: I've played World of Warcraft almost since it came out and stopped about 3-4 months ago, I've done it all in that game from serious raiding to crafting to just sitting in chat idling. I quit because I was tired of the game, its players and the bad expansions. After WOW I tried several different MMO's, most notably Rift and LOTR but they're all the same; the same game play, the graphics, some even copy over WOW's interface and world colours. If I'd want to play a game like that then guess what, I'd still be playing WOW.

This game interests me BECAUSE it's different and BECAUSE it forces me to think, learn new things and adapt. I don't need to be told stuff in WOW terms, it might help with the initial understanding a bit at times but it's not like I'm too stupid to grasp basic logic. I do just fine in EVE without having to be explained stuff in terms of "warrior", "mana", "raid boss" or silliness like that. Stating that people from other games need this translation in order to make the transition to EVE is actually rather condescending.

In short; you're wrong or you're just trolling. Either way you're doing neither game a service.

This is not really accurate.
Of course i wont question weather or not most players in your corp has never played WOW or another online game, but using that as "proof" that people who play other online games have no interest in a game like EVE is a bit naive to be honest.
You cant even really say that it only interests people who likes "spaceship and fancy explosions!".

In the long run one of the major reasons people stay in an online game is because they enjoy the community and social aspect of said game.

I can however feel pretty comfterbale saying that from my experience EVE caters to a more mature and older player base then games like WOW. Someone who wants a new mental challange and is no longer looking for the...instant reward i guess you cay say.. that WOW provides (going up a level, new gear, new zones) and so on, which is something many players enjoy and helps make them feel they are making visible and clear progress.

Besides... a persons taste changes quite a bit over the years. If you had asked me 7 years ago i would say i could never have enjoyed a game like WOW, ask me now and i can admit i did have fun there while it lasted (maybe a year).

But maybe it also has something to do with who you recruit...Being in a corp that accepts new players i have noticed a higher..drive? of new players that are former WOW players lately then i used to and it is possible that now the people who started WOW years ago just feel mentally ready to start something different.

I will also fully admit that there has been times where i have used "WOW terms" to explain something to a new player, not because they are incapable of understanding it otherwise, but because it saves both them and me time that could be better spent on other things. It also helps prevent that new player from feeling like a complete idiot asking me to explain something better/more detailed because they don't understand/know the terms im using and helps them relax more around asking questions in general. Well, thats the impression i have gotten at least Smile
